Page 18 | Thursday, January 21, 2010 | THE BOWLING NEWS NFL Super Bowl(ing) for charity MIAMI, FL, — For the fifth year in a row, more than 30 NFL legends will hit the lanes at the NFL Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic, presented by NFL Charities and Strike Ten Entertainment (STE), the marketing arm of the bowling industry. Super Bowl legend, MVP of Super Bowl X and “dual-sport” Hall of Famer (both football and bowling), Lynn Swann, will return for a third straight year to serve as event host. This year’s event, which is open to the public, will be held at 7p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4 at SpareZ Lanes, located in Davie, FL, just minutes from Dolphin Stadium, the site of Super Bowl XLIV. “I’m excited and honored to once again host a great Super Bowl tradition, the NFL Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic,” Swann said. “I’m also feeling good about my bowling team’s chances of winning this year’s tournament trophy, the third time will be the charm in 2010,” said Swann. “What is particularly special about this event is that players and fans of all bowling skill levels get to play together, side-by-side, all in the name of a great cause.” Proceeds from the tournament will help fund the NFL’s Youth Education Town (YET) initiative in South Florida. NFL Youth Education Towns (YETs) are education and recreation centers constructed in Super Bowl host cities that serve as a lasting legacy of each game. With each Super Bowl, the NFL donates $1 million towards YET development in an underserved area of that city. Presently, there are 15 YETs in 12 cities across the United States. As its legacy to the cities that host Super Bowls, the NFL establishes these learning and recreational centers. Prior to the Celebrity Bowling Classic, the NFL greats will team with professional bowlers to lead a private bowling clinic for local South Florida elementary school children on Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 11 a.m.–1 p.m., also to be held at SpareZ Lanes (private clinic will be open to the media only). “In addition to being an exceptionally fun time for our participants, this event helps to promote a wonderful cause and make a real difference, positively impacting the lives of thousands of local kids in the Super Bowl’s host city,” said Jim Sturm, president of STE and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA). “We’re so pleased to again, for a fifth straight year, have bowling be included as a premier event at the Super Bowl. The continued success and popularity of the NFL Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic speaks to both the surging popularity of our sport and the tremendous fundraising power of bowling.” “Bowling and Lynn Swann have been great friends and partners to NFL Charities with this annual tournament, which has become a fixture at the Super Bowl and one of our most interactive fan and NFL player experiences,” said Tournament director, Nick Nicolosi. “We have an incredible line-up of former NFL greats playing in this year’s tournament, providing a rare opportunity for football lovers to get to know some of their favorite players while playing one of the best games in the world.” Legendary NFL stars and Pro Football Hall of Fame members confirmed to participate in the Celebrity Bowling Classic include (subject to change): Hank Bauer, Marlin Briscoe, Keith Byars, Richard Dent, Parnell Dickinson, Marv Fleming, Charles Haley, Rodney Hampton, Reggie Haynes, Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson, Ted Hendricks, Lamonte Hunley, Ricky Hunley, Roy Jefferson, Brian Kelley, Kent Kramer, Ron Kramer, Paul Krause, Bob Kuechenberg, Sean Landeta, Larry Little, Tom Mack, Randall McDaniel, Curtis McGriff, Chuck Mercein, Michael Merriweather, Bobby Mitchell, Tom Nowatzke, Billy Shaw, Lance Smith, Jan Stenerud, Jimmy Taylor, Roger Wehrli, Fred Williamson and Garo Yepremian. The NFL Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic is open to the public. SPOTLIGHT Continued from Page 3 Super Bowl. We last heard from Lisa in September and I mentioned then that it would not be the last time she was high for the week…and it wasn’t. Lisa is the office manager for Advanced Integration Technologies. They are an Aerospace Engineering firm and she has been there for 14 years. She is also a mother to four boys, Scott 25, Brian 23, Gregg 19, Peter 18, and the wife to local striking legend Tam Wasson. What ball did you throw? The Mutant Cell, it is the newest ball I have. It was a Christmas present from my husband Tam. What is your all-time favorite bowling ball? I have liked everything that has come out. I don’t know that I have a favorite ball, but Ebonite is my favorite ball company of all time. How much do you practice? I have been actually been practicing more since I have been changing my pitches. I have been going and practicing once or twice a week. Last year in the Bluebonnet Queens I tore my thumb up really bad. So I have been talking to lots of people about what I could do. Dino Castillo came up with the most logical idea, as I am getting older I have lost flexibility in my thumb so he recommended that I quit using reverse and start using some forward pitch in the thumb. So for right now I have gone to zero pitch in my thumb and I think I am getting much closer, I am ready to go bowl a tournament. Do you have anyone who coach’s you? I don’t really have a coach, My game is pretty unique. Tam knows my game better than anyone else in the world and he is my number one go to guy. If I ask politely he will help me. How many leagues do you bowl? I bowl in three counting TCBA Travel League. For the last few years we have bowled the same leagues. We bowl a league in Sherman that is great fun for us since it is a ways from the house, they have wood lanes, so it is a different look than the synthetic lanes around town. How long do you plan to keep bowling? As long as it still fun. I don’t want to bowl when it hurts, so it is important to get my thumb under control. I would still watch and be involved in bowling, but it is important for me to be competitive. Probably 30 or 40 more years, ha-ha. I am still looking forward to bowling a SASBA event soon. Where did you take your best vacation? I would have to say when Tam, I and the four boys and we to Florida and Disney World. It was so great to see the coast, The Keys, and of course seeing the boy’s faces at Disney World, good memories. I think I would want to change the perception of what people think handicap is. I don’t think people understand what it is for, what it is, and how it should be used. When I coached in college, I spent a lot of time on that, but I don’t think most people get it. Handicap is used to even the playing field, it should not be used to allow the lower average Call us for more information. 817-267-8686 Cooper 178-481.
