Vicki Rios and Leisha Murr came down to bowl in the Two to Tangi mixed doubles tournament and instantly created a bond with many of the bowlers form the Hammond area. They asked me to help come up with an idea for a tournament that would help bring together all of the bowlers and give the ladies a chance to showcase their talent. The Leadoff Lady Trio was 2010 Champions, Chris Johnson, left, Heather Jones and Jay Ashbaugh. created and the tournament filled almost instantly after it was announced. It was only fitting that one of the ladies the trio tournament in Vicki’s honor. It became the Vicki Rios Memorial Leadoff Lady Trio Tournament. Rios and her teammates Glenn Hauck and Troy Graham made it to the finals, only to lose by three pins to Heather Jones, Smurf and Chris Johnson, when Graham left a seven pin in the 10th frame. Almost two months later, on March 12, Vicki lost a much bigger match and all of us lost a great friend. Vicki and Alan Hunter were killed in an automobile accident and bowlers all over the South have been bowling with heavy hearts ever since that tragic morning. Without hesitation, I knew that we needed something to keep the memory of Vicki alive and decided to dedicate 205-592, Chrissy Castro (4 games) 245-893, Bill McCormack 687, Teresa Herr 202-518. Each year in January there will be a mixed scratch trio tournament at Tangi Lanes in Hammond, LA. Bowlers gather from all across the South to participate in this tournament. So far we have had 11 states represented. The event starts with a bowler’s auction, where 10 percent of the total goes toward a scholarship for junior bowlers in Vicki’s name. After the auction, the bowlers compete in six games of qualifying with bonus points awarded for match play wins. The top six teams advance to the finals, with the top two seeds receiving a one round bye. The championship match in the first tournament came down to the 10th frame with April Ellis, Scott Monteleone and Shaun Thonn coming out as the winners. This years’ event didn’t fail to exceed the expectations when the championship match again came down to the final bowlers in the 10th frame. Chris Johnson struck with his first ball in the 10th frame to ensure victory for his team, consisting of Heather Jones and Jay Ashbaugh. Coming up just short and finishing second was the team of Elizabeth Brents, Tyson Branagan and Shawn Maldanado. This tournament is full of great bowling, but it’s bigger than bowling. It’s about great bowlers and great friends coming together to share in a loved one’s memory.
