Oil on canvas. 75 x 64 cm. 1949 is a year of change in the artistic work of Preben Hornung as he is leaving naturalism behind in favour of a constructivist expression. In a series of factory paintings with motifs taken from the Steel Rolling Mill in Frederiksværk, the artist makes abstractions of the architecture and the machines of the large-scale in- BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 777 369 dustry. The heavy machines with pipes, pistons and tubes are in Hornung’s paintings transformed into dynamic compositions where each element has its own precisely balanced placement. From 1949 to 1951, Hornung exhibited with the group Linien II who introduced the abstract-constructive painting in Denmark, a painting founded on geometric shapes, planes, rhythm and movement.
