alternatives. State-of-the-art heat and power plants have been identified to have a view of the advantages and disadvantages as well as possible obstacles for their implementation. A questionnaire was develop and sent to approximately 120 experts in Sweden. It included experts at energy related organizations such as research institutes, universities, energy producers, biofuel producers, equipment manufacturers, energy consultants and associations. The questionnaires results together with the findings of the literature survey will be the base for the discussion and evaluation of the different alternatives for cogeneration. Ideas and opinions provided by the experts will be considered carefully and will be discussed in the final report. Approximately 25% of the questionnaires have been answered and interesting ideas have already been suggested. Contact with other groups has been established, especially with Prof. Carl-Johan Fogelholm at Helsinki University of Technology. Currently, a Ph.D. student working on small-scale biomass heat and power plants (< 20 MWe) under the supervision of Prof. Fogelholm is at the Chair of Heat and Power Technology. This collaboration is done under the framework of the Nordic Energy Research Program (NEFP). The project funded by NEFP is focused on the alternatives of heat and power production from small power plants in Finland, with special emphasis on high power-to-heat ratios. Due to the similarities between the projects, close cooperation has been established between the Chair of Heat and Power Technology (KTH) and the Laboratory of Energy Engineering and Environmental Protection (HUT). Extremely valuable input has been obtained from the reference group. The reference group suggested keeping a broad view at this preliminary stage. Other suggestions presented by the reference group include: the apartment/office building sector as possible niche for small-scale CHP plants; grid stability issues; and critical driving forces such as CO2 taxes, green certificates and future electricity cost in an integrated European electricity market. A seminar will be organized in April 2002 for the CETET members (Center for Energy Conversion Technologies at KTH). The aim is to review the results obtained and discuss new ideas and possible applications of the different alternatives proposed. Another objective is to establish collaboration under the CETET framework with other divisions and departments in order to investigate issues related with small-scale applications such as grid stability and small district heating networks. Power plant visits will be organized at the beginning of April 2002 to collect technical and operational data about small-scale state-of-the-art power plants. Four graduate students from the Division of Heat and Power Technology and the visiting graduate student for HUT will participate in the visits. The result from theses visits will be included in the final report to be submitted at the end of April 2002. Slutsatser. Utfall i relation till ursprunglig målsättning: Although the literature review, qualitative survey and personal interviews are incomplete at this stage, some preliminary conclusions can be made. It is apparent that a broad approach is needed in identifying and optimizing the best solutions for the implementation of bio-fueled small-scale CHP plants. The findings from power plant visits will contribute to complement this broad approach and to define key issues from the operational point of view. The survey results so far have been promising. To date the pre-study has been successful in determining a wide range of potential technical solutions and in defining the criteria for future analysis.
These findings together with the discussions with CETET members, as well as recommendations for future research will be identified in the final report. Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten: A suggested study based on the results of the proposed project will widen the conventional field and investigate all the possible improvements in small-scale power plants using biofuels. The objective of this future work will be to make an assessment of possibilities for increased efficiency and energy utilization of biofuels in small size plants. The analysis will be made from the technical, thermodynamic, economic and environmental points of view through the use of an integrated thermoeconomic and environomic modeling. This approach includes modeling of the plant and its components and the analysis of the associated environmental aspects, thus rendering a complete view of power plant feasibility and possible impacts. This analysis will consider the most promising technologies identified in the pre-study. Therefore, it will be a complete evaluation of the thermodynamic, economic and environmental issues related with the application of the selected technologies in Sweden. The boundaries of the <strong>system</strong> will be established according with the results of the pre-study to emphasize the most sensitive issues than need to be solved in order to implement small-scale CHP plants. A project group will be suggested to study several issues associated with this concept.
