Project description:
An application for a mainly experimental project on high-pressure catalytic combustion at for
Gas Turbines was handed in to STEM and a six-month pre-study period was granted.
Experiments are planned for several types of catalysts at low and high humidity levels of up to
0.3 kg steam per kilo dry air and pressures of up to 35 Bar. Fuels to be tested include gasified
biomass and natural gas, Tests will be performed in bench scale tests with fuel power input of
up to 100 kW, with air pre-heating temperatures of up to 600°C. An existing test rig has to be
modified for these experiments.
Project goal:
The goal of the project is to deliver high quality global experimental data on combustion
stability and emissions for catalytic combustors using
• various different catalyst configurations
• various fuels in air with high humidity, up to 0.3 kg of steam per kg dry air.
• at pressures from atmospheric, up to 35 Bars
• at air inlet temperatures of up to 500 °C
Publish two Tekn.Lic thesis and three Ph.D thesis.
• Tekn. Lic thesis
At the end of second year of the project, by March 2003, Jeevan Jayasuriya (HPT/KTH)
and Katarina Persson (KT/KTH) would complete their licentiate thesis.
• Ph.D thesis
By the end of year 2003, Jan Fredriksson (HPT/KTH), would complete his Ph.D thesis.
By the end of year 2005, Jeevan Jayasuriya (HPT/KTH) and Katarina Persson (KT/KTH)
would complete their Ph.D thesis.
Results:
Test rig is assembly is partly completed. Most of the hardware has been delivered. Ceramic
reactor tube assembly yet to be delivered. Delivery is scheduled on the second week of March
2002. Compressed air, cooling water, fuel supply, exhaust, electricity and control systems are
designed and partly installed. Catalysts to be tested in the first phase of experiments have been
developed and tested.
