2. <strong>Photonics</strong> Research and Innovation Challenges<br />

We will soon live <strong>in</strong> a world <strong>in</strong> which everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that could be connected will be connected. As well<br />

as connect<strong>in</strong>g homes, broadband technologies will<br />

also connect bus<strong>in</strong>esses, equipments and <strong>in</strong>fra-<br />

structures for research and production, open<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up new commercial opportunities and enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

different ways of liv<strong>in</strong>g. All these solutions will<br />

need photonic systems and technologies, because<br />

they are the only possible way to sufficiently reduce<br />

energy consumption, whilst still provid<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

high levels of performance demanded. <strong>Photonics</strong><br />

is the enabl<strong>in</strong>g technology for all wireless and wired<br />

broadband technologies.<br />

Demands for connectivity and data are grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exponentially. Moreover, <strong>in</strong>formation storage,<br />

manage ment and security will require new, dedicat-<br />

ed solutions to match these demands. All such chal-<br />

lenges will need broadband access to network re-<br />

sources, a high capacity flexible network, and a large<br />

number of network environments, such as data-<br />

centres, power grids and research <strong>in</strong>frastructures.<br />

In addition to these challenges, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g global<br />

competition from APAC (Ch<strong>in</strong>a, India) and the US<br />

requires greater <strong>in</strong>novation and more entrepreneurship<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> to re<strong>in</strong>force and grow its lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

role. The ability of <strong>Europe</strong>an <strong>in</strong>dustry to customise<br />

and provide successful end-to-end solutions, parti-<br />

cularly photonic solutions, will be the key to secur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

future employment for <strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

Major photonics needs<br />

Photonic systems and networks, architecture<br />

and functionalities must undergo significant<br />

changes to cope with new applications. With the<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g concern about energy efficiency and carbon<br />

emissions, significant changes are necessary<br />

<strong>in</strong> all network layers and segments (core/metro/<br />

access/datacentre). Moreover, major needs exist<br />

to make the networks faster, more secure, more<br />

flexible, more transparent, easier to use, and to<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g them closer to the customer. Functionalities<br />

for which photonics can br<strong>in</strong>g unique advantages,<br />

have to be addressed. These will primarily be highcapacity,<br />

high-speed and low latency transmission<br />

of data between arbitrary end-po<strong>in</strong>ts, and could<br />

also extend <strong>in</strong>to areas such as encryption, switch<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

quantum communication and comput<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Novel and disruptive techniques are required to<br />

cope with the ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g demands for capacity,<br />

especially <strong>in</strong> the backbone networks, for which<br />

a transmission capacity of several times 100 Tbps<br />

per fibre is predicted by the year 2020. Today the<br />

growth <strong>in</strong> datacentre traffic is demand<strong>in</strong>g more energy<br />

efficient ways of comput<strong>in</strong>g and mov<strong>in</strong>g data<br />

across the network. <strong>Photonics</strong> opens up excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Photonics</strong> is the enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technology for all wireless<br />

and wired broadband<br />

technologies.<br />
