2.7 Education, Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g &<br />

Disruptive Research<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong> socio-economic challenges addressed<br />

Major progress is needed both on advanced<br />

research, and on education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

of highly-skilled workforce, if photonics is to<br />

address successfully the major socio-econom-<br />

ical challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Europe</strong>, rang<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

health care to security, from energy sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to efficient and clean <strong>in</strong>dustrial production,<br />

and from environmental protection to fast<br />

and efficient communications.<br />

Indeed, the <strong>in</strong>dustrialised world and develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

countries alike have to address the problems of<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability and quality of life, and these will<br />

require new approaches and solutions. <strong>Photonics</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong> recognition of its strategic significance and pervasiveness<br />

throughout many <strong>in</strong>dustrial sectors,<br />

has been identified as one of the Key Enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Technologies for <strong>Europe</strong>. Not only does advanced<br />

photonics research offer new technical solutions<br />

for exist<strong>in</strong>g problems, but it also paves the way to<br />

as yet unimag<strong>in</strong>ed applications. The education and<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of high-level professionals and a skilled<br />

workforce, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g technicians, will allow <strong>in</strong>novation<br />

<strong>in</strong> photonics to be susta<strong>in</strong>ed, thus ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued economic growth and employment.<br />

Major photonics needs<br />

Three ma<strong>in</strong> photonics fields have been identified<br />

that must be addressed by advanced research to<br />

tackle the ma<strong>in</strong> societal challenges and produce<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative solutions across the sector:<br />

n Nanophotonics (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g graphene photonics,<br />

metamaterials, and plasmonics). These offer<br />

enormous improvements <strong>in</strong> sens<strong>in</strong>g, imag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and energy generation.<br />

n Quantum optics and quantum <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

This technology will revolutionise the field of<br />

comput<strong>in</strong>g, data process<strong>in</strong>g and secure communications,<br />

but also has the potential to impact<br />

the field of sens<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

n Extreme light (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g high power, extreme<br />

wavelengths and ultra-short pulses). This technology<br />

will broaden the application of lightmatter<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractions, thereby open<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

new techniques for sens<strong>in</strong>g, imag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

material characterisation, material process<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and advanced manufactur<strong>in</strong>g, and also play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a major role <strong>in</strong> fundamental studies.<br />

Achiev<strong>in</strong>g these goals requires specific actions <strong>in</strong><br />

education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, aimed at address<strong>in</strong>g three<br />

specific target groups – young m<strong>in</strong>ds, professionals,<br />

and society at large. The ma<strong>in</strong> actions identified<br />

to address this are:<br />

n outreach towards young m<strong>in</strong>ds, the general<br />

public and political authorities, aimed both at<br />

attrac t<strong>in</strong>g more students, and at creat<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

strong consensus and awareness of the importance<br />

of photonics.<br />

allow <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> photonics<br />

to be susta<strong>in</strong>ed, thus ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued economic growth<br />

and employment.
