24 January 2013 Provincial Circular Page 6 FAREWELL TO BR HENRY VAN DER LAAN On Monday 7 January 2013 at ‘Rupertswood’ we farewelled our dear friend and confrere, Henry van der Laan, who went to his heavenly reward on 30 December 2012 at the age of 87. During the Funeral Mass in the new chapel at Salesian College, we celebrated Henry’s long and fruitful Salesian life both in the Netherlands, where he served from 1953 to 1963, and in Australia, where he ministered from 1963 in Sunbury, Boys Town Engadine (for over 30 years), Palmerston, Sunbury again, and finally John Paul Village in his beloved Engadine. During his homily on this occasion, Fr Peter Carroll, Rector of the Engadine Salesian Community, paid a moving tribute to Henry: “So here is the face of God; a revelation in the infectious smile and little laugh, in the requests that would wear you down so people had to say yes. But the image of God lies, I think, even more in the gnarled hands and worn-out knees; the image of Jesus who in earlier years was either a factotum or a tekton, an apprentice carpenter/mason. There is too the legacy of St Joseph; the worker, the provider, the one who accepted without too many questions, the one so often in the
