Subject: overlijden H vd Laan
Ton Moester s.d.b. (Adelaide, Australië ) over Hein van der Laan
30-12-2012
We deelden alles samen.
Hein was
gesprek drie weken geleden. Ik mis Hein en onze gesprekken. We zullen het in het eeuwig
leven moeten voortzetten.
4-01-2013
was.
20-01-2013
Wij
It is only now I read this sad news. I am sad to
read of the passing away of my good old friend
from Darwin, Bro. Henry Van der Laan..
I believe that Br Henry is in heaven because he
was an angel to me. I offer my 3 Masses for his
soul.
I can’t forget the way he received me in the
Salesian Community of Palmerston way back in
1999..., it was brotherly love.
I felt at home when I started my awful day
because I was traumatized by the events of
burning and violence in Dili. It was he among the
Salesian confreres in Palmerston who accepted
me at once and made me feel comfortable.
It was Brother Henry who gave me some money
to answer to my personal needs of buying some
clothes.. a needed toothbrush or some sandwich to
eat .. it was he who asked me gently if I had some
money to use for my personal needs at that time. I
was ashamed to inform him that i had only let’s
say 50,000 rupiah (5 US dollars) in my pocket .
I did not know where to go and ask for help.. but
Bro. Henry was the human Salesian who touched
my heart when he asked: “Jojo, I like to ask a
personal question. Do you have some money with
you?"
And I humbly said.. “I don’t have much. I have
only 5 dollars in my pocket..."
It was then that he gave me 500 dollars. I felt
good for being recepient of love and
thoughtfulness, that I needed.
“Dear Bro. Henry, thanks a lot for your big
heart, your brotherly concern (which we
Salesians sometimes forget.). You accepted me
and raised me up when I was down in 1999.
Thanks for your friendship, your jokes, your
weird ideas, your showy smile, that caused
smiling faces around... Thanks. May God
bless you. See you in heaven. Amen "
Please extend my love and respect to his family
(from Netherlands) and Fr. Provincial.
Thanks a lot, peace and love,
Jojo
Ik voelde me thuis, maar voelde me beroerd
dollar in m'n zak.
Toen gaf hij me 500 dollar.
soms vergeten). Je ontving me en hielp me
overeind toen ik down was in 1999.
Haar oudste broer is daarheen geëmigreerd. Zoals in
'Oh,
thats my school!' We kwamen dus feilloos bij de
school. Salesiaan Peter Rankin leidt ons rond. Gastvrij
Oh! We
Ja! So,so; that
makes a big difference, murmelt hij.
Daar down under. That makes a big difference.
Tributes received already from Boys' Town Old Boys
/ am very saddened to hear the news of the death of a remarkable man that touched
everyone's life (especially mine) that he came in contact with. His is a story of
boundless energy given to the order and the lives of the many boys in the 33 years
he spent at BT. I was at Boys Town from 1975 until 1978 and Brother Henry was
one of those people that helped to change my life. I am disappointed that I cannot be
there in Australia for his funeral.
Pat Hawkins
My dearest friend
None will ever walk in your shoes for they are too big to fill. Your endless devotion to
your faith will always be like a beacon to me. You showed me the way when I was
lost; you consoled me when I was in turmoil. When I was young you helped me to learn
tolerance. Where I had anger, you were my friend then. You were still my friend to the
end. I weep with sadness at the loss I feel, but I know that you are in a place that you
truly belong.
My dear friend Henry I will always treasure all the memories I have of you, there were
never any bad ones. Your friendliness opened up the hearts of many, your actions in
my eyes were so pure. To me you were a saint among men. It was not only an honour
knowing you but an absolute pleasure. No matter what the hardship you faced, you
always smiled and marched on. You never faltered until the mission was done. What
more inspiration could one aspire to, a loving caring heart that never lost his faith in
God. You always found the best in people; these are just a few of the things I will
remember you for.
My dear friend Henry, this is not farewell. This is just a short pause for us, we will
meet again and we will embrace with a smile on our faces as we had done before.
Until then I will fondly remember you, goodbye for now Henry your friend always. I
quietly share prayers with all of you on this day.
ENTRANCE HYMN [please stand]
Come as you are, that's how I want you
Come as you are, feel quite at home
Close to my heart, loved and forgiven
Come as you are, why stand alone?
No need to fear, love sets no limits
No need to fear, love never ends
Don't run away, shamed and disheartened
Rest in my love, trust me again
I came to call sinners, not just the virtuous
I came to bring peace, not to condemn
Each time you fail, to live by my promise
Why do you think, I'd love you the less?
Come as you are, that's how I love you
Come as you are, trust me again
Nothing can change, the love that I bear you
All will be well, just come as you are
LITURGY OF THE WORD
A reading from the Book of Wisdom
The souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment
shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise, they did
appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving
us like annihilation; but they are in peace.
If they experienced punishment as we see it, their hope was
rich with immortality; slight was their affliction, great will
their blessings be. God has put them to the test and proved
them worthy to be with him. He has tested them like gold
in a furnace, and accepted them as a holocaust.
Those who trust in him will understand the truth, those who
are faithful will live with him in love; for grace and mercy
await those he has chosen.
Responsorial
The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want;
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.
Yea, tho' I walk in death's dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For Thou art with me, and Thy rod
And staff me comfort still.
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans
The life and death of each one of us has its influence on others; if
we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord, so
that alive or dead we belong to the Lord.
This explains why Christ both died and came to life, it was so that
he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.
Happy the gentle:
they shall have the earth for their heritage!
Happy those who mourn;
PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL [ please stand.]
Priest: God our Father, we celebrate Brother Henry's journey
through life with joy, and we remember the many blessings you gave
him in life. Knowing you are faithful to your promises, we now turn
to you in confident prayer.
1. In baptism, Brother Henry received the light of Christ. Scatter the
darkness now and lead him over the waters of death. Lord hear us.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
2. As a Salesian, Brother Henry spent his life following Jesus,
obedient, chaste and poor. He also followed Don Bosco's way of
cheerfulness, generosity and hard work. Count him among all
holy men and women who share eternal love and life with you.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
3. Comfort all who mourn Brother Henry's death with the hope and
promise of eternal life. We remember particularly his beloved
relatives in the Netherlands and the many friends with whom he
shared his love of life in Australia.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
4. Lord, we pray for everyone in this church today. May we all find
consolation in the belief that death is not the end, but rather a new
beginning with our God.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
5. Many relatives and friends have gone before us and await the
Kingdom of heaven. Grant them all an everlasting home with
your son.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
Priest: Lord, hear our prayers for our brother, Henry, and for all who
have gone before us in faith to eternal life. Free them from all
their sins and let them share in the fullness of salvation in
the kingdom where you are Lord for ever and ever.
All: Amen.
I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord! It is I, Lord!
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain.
I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone. Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?
I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
I will give my light to them. Whom shall I send?
FINAL COMMENDATION
Priest: Trusting in God, we have prayed together for
Henry and now we come to the last farewell.
There is sadness in parting, but we take comfort
in the hope that one day we shall see Henry
again and enjoy his friendship. Although we will
disperse in sorrow, the mercy of God will
gather us together again in the joy of his kingdom.
and let perpetual light shine upon him!
All: Receive his soul and present him to God,
Priest: Into your hands, Father of mercies, we commend Henry in the sure
and certain hope that, together with all who have died in Christ, he will
rise with him on the last day.
We give you thanks for the blessings which you have
bestowed upon Henry in this life; they are signs to us
RECESSIONAL HYMN
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'T is Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
FAREWELL TO BR HENRY VAN DER LAAN
On Monday 7 January 2013 at ‘Rupertswood’ we
farewelled our dear friend and confrere, Henry van
der Laan, who went to his heavenly reward on 30
December 2012 at the age of 87.
During the Funeral Mass in the new chapel at
Salesian College, we celebrated Henry’s long and
fruitful Salesian life both in the Netherlands, where
he served from 1953 to 1963, and in Australia,
where he ministered from 1963 in Sunbury, Boys
Town Engadine (for over 30 years), Palmerston,
Sunbury again, and finally John Paul Village in his
beloved Engadine.
Number 535
In his homily, Fr Bernie Graham, our Vice-Provincial, reminded us of how seriously
and wholeheartedly Henry lived out Jesus’ injunction: “In so far as you did this to
one of the least of these brothers of mine you did it to me.”
In this regard, “he was legendary as a provider of things to feed, quench the thirst
and clothe people - the boys, the Salesian and Sisters communities, families,
whomever and wherever. And in many cases these were often the neediest of the
needy, and the least of the least.”
“He was also well known as a welcomer and visitor of people: the stranger, the ill
and even those in prison - and all of these categories made up part of the broader
Boys’ Town community of those years, among the boys, their families and the past
pupils, a group he loved dearly and they loved and appreciated him.”
Bernie concluded by saying, on behalf of us all: “Henry, we thank you for the gift
that you have been to the young, as a son of Don Bosco and a witness to Jesus the
Christ.”
During the week before Henry’s farewell and burial at Sunbury, the Engadine
Community itself had come together to celebrate Henry’s life and contribution in a
Requiem Mass at the Mary Help of Christians Church, Heathcote NSW on Thursday 3
January.
During his homily on this occasion, Fr Peter Carroll, Rector of the Engadine Salesian
Community, paid a moving tribute to Henry:
“So here is the face of God; a revelation in the infectious smile and little laugh, in
the requests that would wear you down so people had to say yes. But the image of
God lies, I think, even more in the gnarled hands and worn-out knees; the image of
Jesus who in earlier years was either a factotum or a tekton, an apprentice
carpenter/mason. There is too the legacy of St Joseph; the worker, the provider,
the one who accepted without too many questions, the one so often in the

background, the one in fact whom Don Bosco selected as patron for his Brothers.
There is practical Christianity here and a different insight into another perspective of
God.”
But perhaps the ultimate tribute to Br Henry, Salesian of Don Bosco, was paid by an
Old Boy of Boys’ Town, John Landauer:
“Br Henry was truly a one off. For me he can be best summed up as ’A Father to
many young boys and a Friend to everyone’.”
In conclusion, I wish to convey my sincere thanks to all those who were able to
attend Henry’s farewell eucharists at Sunbury and Engadine, particularly the
Salesians, Salesian Sisters, Salesian Family Members and Past Pupils who were
present, as well as Henry’s many friends and associates. I would also like to
acknowledge the members of the Sunbury and Engadine/Heathcote communities
(especially the Parish, Dunlea Centre and John Paul Village groups) who graciously
‘hosted’ the two eucharists.
Finally, in regard to the funeral mass at Sunbury, I wish to thank my two principal
concelebrants, Bernie Graham and Peter Carroll, all concelebrants and office-bearers,
Paul Miles and his team for leading the music and singing, and Fr Chris Dimolianis, a
Greek Orthodox Priest from South Melbourne, who is a past student of Boys’ Town
and officially represented all the Boys’ Town old boys at the funeral.
