Introduction<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Öresund</strong> is an important stag<strong>in</strong>g and w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g area for a large number of w<strong>at</strong>erfowl<br />

species. Therefore Saltholm (on <strong>the</strong> Danish side) and Foteviken-Falsterbo (<strong>in</strong> Sweden) have<br />

been appo<strong>in</strong>ted as ”Special Bird Protection Areas” (SPA) under <strong>the</strong> bird’s directive of <strong>the</strong><br />

European Union (79/409/EEG). Both <strong>the</strong>se areas are also appo<strong>in</strong>ted as areas of <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

importance under <strong>the</strong> Ramsar convention (www.ramsar.org). O<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> <strong>sou<strong>the</strong>rn</strong><br />

<strong>Öresund</strong>, e.g. Lommabukten and Lundåkrabukten are also important for different wetland<br />

species and show bird numbers higher than <strong>the</strong> criteria for <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional importance.<br />

The <strong>sou<strong>the</strong>rn</strong> part of <strong>Öresund</strong> is also an area where large numbers of migr<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g birds of<br />

different species are pass<strong>in</strong>g both dur<strong>in</strong>g spr<strong>in</strong>g and autumn. These parts probably hold <strong>the</strong><br />

largest concentr<strong>at</strong>ions of migrants <strong>in</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia (Alerstam 1978, 1990) as this is where <strong>the</strong><br />

over-w<strong>at</strong>er passage over <strong>the</strong> Baltic between Scand<strong>in</strong>avia and <strong>the</strong> Danish islands (and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

longer perspective <strong>the</strong> European cont<strong>in</strong>ent) is shortest. This means th<strong>at</strong> large numbers of<br />

migrants arrive <strong>to</strong> Scand<strong>in</strong>avia from sou<strong>the</strong>rly and southwesterly w<strong>in</strong>ter quarters here <strong>in</strong><br />

spr<strong>in</strong>g, and th<strong>at</strong> even higher numbers depart from Scand<strong>in</strong>avia over this area <strong>in</strong> autumn. The<br />

migra<strong>to</strong>ry bird movements over <strong>the</strong> area have been studied for many years <strong>at</strong> Falsterbo Bird<br />

Observa<strong>to</strong>ry (http://www.falsterbofagelst<strong>at</strong>ion.se/ ).<br />

Based on this background, avian studies formed an important part of <strong>the</strong> Environmental<br />

Impact Assessment when <strong>the</strong> Lillgrund W<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> was planned <strong>in</strong> <strong>sou<strong>the</strong>rn</strong> <strong>Öresund</strong> (Fig. 1).<br />

A desk<strong>to</strong>p study of <strong>the</strong> possible effects on <strong>the</strong> bird fauna of <strong>the</strong> planned w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> was<br />

published by Nilsson (2001). As a part of <strong>the</strong> conditions for <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> a moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g<br />

program was established <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong> possible impact of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> on <strong>the</strong> bird fauna.<br />

The moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g program <strong>in</strong>cluded studies both on stag<strong>in</strong>g/w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g birds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area and <strong>the</strong><br />

bird migr<strong>at</strong>ion through <strong>the</strong> area. For stag<strong>in</strong>g/w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>at</strong>er birds <strong>the</strong> study aimed <strong>to</strong> establish<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> had any effects on <strong>the</strong>ir possibilities <strong>to</strong> utilize <strong>the</strong>ir feed<strong>in</strong>g areas. For<br />

actively migr<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g birds <strong>the</strong> program aimed <strong>at</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> if <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> affected <strong>the</strong><br />

migra<strong>to</strong>ry movements over <strong>the</strong> area, if <strong>the</strong>re was any avoidance behavior th<strong>at</strong> could lead <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>creased costs for <strong>the</strong> birds or if <strong>the</strong>re were any large risks for collisions with <strong>the</strong> turb<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

These questions were analyzed through studies performed before <strong>the</strong> construction and dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> first years of oper<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong>. Stag<strong>in</strong>g/w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g birds were counted from both<br />

bo<strong>at</strong> and aircraft both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possible impact area, here def<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>the</strong> area between <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Öresund</strong> Bridge between Sweden and Denmark and <strong>the</strong> Falsterbo pen<strong>in</strong>sula and a reference<br />

area south of Falsterbo (aerial surveys only), where we did not expect any risks for effects.<br />

This l<strong>at</strong>ter part of <strong>the</strong> study was important <strong>to</strong> get background <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion on fluctu<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>in</strong><br />

numbers of stag<strong>in</strong>g/w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>at</strong>er birds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

Bird migr<strong>at</strong>ion over <strong>the</strong> area was studied us<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>at</strong>a from two surveillance radar st<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> base-l<strong>in</strong>e studies visual observ<strong>at</strong>ions of bird migr<strong>at</strong>ion was conducted from a<br />

neighbor<strong>in</strong>g vantage po<strong>in</strong>t (Green & Nilsson 2006). Background <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> general<br />

bird migr<strong>at</strong>ion over <strong>the</strong> area was also obta<strong>in</strong>ed from studies <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Öresund</strong><br />

Bridge, just north of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> area (Nilsson et al. 2009, 2010).<br />

The first phase of <strong>the</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g program (before <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong>) was<br />

undertaken dur<strong>in</strong>g 2001 – 2006 (Green & Nilsson 2006). There was no field work dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

construction period as it is clear th<strong>at</strong> this work would lead <strong>to</strong> large disturbances on <strong>the</strong> birds<br />
