Spr<strong>in</strong>g- sou<strong>the</strong>rly directed migr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
General<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> migra<strong>to</strong>ry movements <strong>to</strong>wards nor<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re is also a ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />
numerous passage of birds <strong>to</strong>wards south (Fig. 48). These movements are ma<strong>in</strong>ly made up of<br />
Eiders, w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> K<strong>at</strong>teg<strong>at</strong> and follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Swedish west coast <strong>to</strong>wards south before<br />
enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Baltic and <strong>the</strong>n turn<strong>in</strong>g east and nor<strong>the</strong>ast. O<strong>the</strong>r w<strong>at</strong>erfowl such as Common<br />
Scoters are also <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this passage. Dur<strong>in</strong>g analysed days <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g 2002, 2005, 2008<br />
and 2009 annual <strong>to</strong>tals pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> transect 1-4 varied between 200 and 1800 bird echoes<br />
(flocks, Table A12 <strong>in</strong> appendix). Somewhere <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> order of 100 000 birds probably pass with<br />
south oriented flight directions each spr<strong>in</strong>g, although Eider numbers have decreased quite<br />
heavily <strong>in</strong> l<strong>at</strong>er years. With same reason<strong>in</strong>g as above for <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> migr<strong>at</strong>ion route <strong>to</strong>wards<br />
nor<strong>the</strong>ast this probably corresponds <strong>to</strong> between 10 000 and 90 000 <strong>in</strong>dividual birds, if average<br />
flock size was around 50 <strong>in</strong>dividuals.<br />
The proportion of flocks pass<strong>in</strong>g sec<strong>to</strong>r 2 with <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> area was low both pre- (0-9 % of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal migr<strong>at</strong>ion volume) and post (1-7 % of <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal migr<strong>at</strong>ion volume) construction of <strong>the</strong><br />
w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong>. There was just a marg<strong>in</strong>al difference between <strong>the</strong> periods <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> proportion of all
