Overall Jacob’s <strong>in</strong>dices for <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> area and <strong>the</strong> 2 km buffer zone show somewh<strong>at</strong><br />
different results compared <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> density analysis above (Table 3). The aerial survey d<strong>at</strong>a<br />
show more or less unchanged D-values from <strong>the</strong> pre- and post construction period <strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal<br />
(0.06 and 0.08 for <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> area, 0.79 and 0.69 for <strong>the</strong> buffer zone respectively)<br />
<strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> irrespective of <strong>the</strong> presence of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Eiders used <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong><br />
area as expected and preferred <strong>the</strong> buffer zone. The bo<strong>at</strong> survey d<strong>at</strong>a however <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ed a<br />
similar p<strong>at</strong>tern as <strong>the</strong> density analysis with preference for <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> area dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> preconstruction<br />
period chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> expected use with <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> <strong>in</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion (D = 0.80 pre,<br />
-0.09 post). The overall change was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same direction for <strong>the</strong> buffer zone where preference<br />
changes <strong>to</strong> more or less expected use (D = 0.68 pre, 0.11 post).<br />
Explan<strong>at</strong>ions for <strong>the</strong>se unclear, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>rel<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> density analysis above conflict<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
results can be found <strong>in</strong> a more detailed look <strong>at</strong> Jacob’s <strong>in</strong>dices from <strong>the</strong> different years<br />
separ<strong>at</strong>ely (Fig. 26). Apparently <strong>the</strong>re was a clear avoidance of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> area dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
first years with <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> <strong>in</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion (low <strong>in</strong>dices 2007-2009) while <strong>the</strong> area was<br />
preferred (aerial survey d<strong>at</strong>a) or used as expected (bo<strong>at</strong> survey d<strong>at</strong>a) <strong>in</strong> 2011. This could be a<br />
sign of habitu<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> although o<strong>the</strong>rs fac<strong>to</strong>rs, such as changes<br />
<strong>in</strong> food availability, can be <strong>in</strong>volved as well.<br />
Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ions of habitu<strong>at</strong>ion of Eiders <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> was th<strong>at</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g aerial<br />
survey <strong>in</strong> 2011 flocks of a few hundred Eiders were found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> but outside <strong>the</strong><br />
survey belt and hence not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> any of <strong>the</strong> figures above. This was <strong>the</strong> first observ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
of larger flocks <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>farm</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g oper<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
