All 6 farm<strong>in</strong>g systems were identified by the IFPRI study (Bolwig et al, 2001) as suitable <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong><strong>in</strong>tensification</strong> of all agricultural enterprises: annual and perennial cash and subsistence crops as<br />
well as livestock production. Only <strong>for</strong> the western part of the southwestern medium-high farmland<br />
(31) did Bolwig et al (2001) propose <strong>in</strong>tensify<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>ly subsistence crops. Development of the<br />
lower ly<strong>in</strong>g areas, which are not covered <strong>in</strong> this report and by the above-mentioned 6 farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
systems, will be ma<strong>in</strong>ly through expansion of agricultural enterprises (Bolwig et al, 2001). In<br />
chapter 4, this report proposes f<strong>in</strong>e-tuned development doma<strong>in</strong>s with<strong>in</strong> the ‘<strong><strong>in</strong>tensification</strong> area’ of<br />
southwestern <strong>Uganda</strong> by recommend<strong>in</strong>g the most suitable farm<strong>in</strong>g systems (or at times altitudes)<br />
<strong>for</strong> various technologies.<br />

Banana production dom<strong>in</strong>ates the use of the cropped land (see tables 2.2 and 2.3), followed by<br />
bean, maize, sweet potato, f<strong>in</strong>ger millet and sorghum as the ma<strong>in</strong> food crops. Tea, coffee (both<br />
robusta and arabica) as well as cotton and Irish potato are the dom<strong>in</strong>ant cash crops.<br />
More than half a million cattle and goats are kept <strong>in</strong> <strong>SW</strong> <strong>Uganda</strong>. Other livestock enterprises<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude sheep, pigs, fishponds, rabbits, silkworm and bee keep<strong>in</strong>g (see table 2.4).
