6 LUBRICATION
LUBRICATION 7
TRANSMISSION
2
At the end of every 4,000 miles of travel, drain all of the lubricant from the transmission
and refill with clean, fresh lubricant to the oil level plug in the side of the case.
The best lubricant for this purpose is Cadillac Rear Axle and Transmission Lubricant.
In its absence we recommend a mixture of steam cylinder oil and a small amount of
cup grease mixed to such a consistency that the mixture flows easily.
REAR AXLE
3
REGULATION OF OIL PRESSURE
The pressure of the oil is regulated by a valve under spring tension. The tension
of the spring is adjustable.
The housing containing the valve is located at the side of the crankcase just back
of the right hand block of cylinders. To increase the oil pressure for any given engine
speed, loosen the lock nut "B" and screw in on the threaded shaft "A". (Turn it in
a clockwise direction.) To decrease the pressure for any given engine speed, unscrew
the shaft "A." (Turn it in a counter clockwise direction.) After making this adjustment,
lock it with the se' aut "B."
At the end of every 4,000 miles of travel, drain all of the lubricant from the rear
axle and refill with enough clean, fresh lubricant to bring the level up to the level of
the rilling hole. The best lubricant for this purpose is Cadillac Rear Axle and Transmission
Lubricant. In its absence we recommend a mixture of steam cylinder oil and
a small amount of cup grease mixed to such a consistency that it flows easily.
ADDITIONAL
POWER TIRE PUMP
8
One filling of the pump will provide sufficient lubrication for inflating four or five
tires, provided they are all inflated, within one week. If a week or more elapses between
the times the pump is used until it is used again, it should be lubricated before it is
used.
To lubricate the pump, proceed as follows:
First run the pump for several seconds with the cap screwed tightly on the connection
to which the hose is attached when inflating tires. This will force back into the
crank case of the pump any oil which may have collected in the oil separating chamber
"B." (See under Power Tire Pump.) Then stop the pump, remove the filling plug
at 8 and fill with oil until it overflows.
Cadillac Rear Axle and Transmission Lubricant is strongly recommended for this
purpose. In its absence the use of a good quality of steam cylinder oil is recommended.
NOTE—You should bear in mind that it is just as essential to lubricate the pump
as the engine, and that the pump will not stand up and give good service unless it
receives proper lubrication
SPARK AND THROTTLE LEVERS
11, 12
The plungers in the spark and throttle levers should be lubricated occasionally.
If the spark and throttle levers stick, rub a little oil on the sector where the friction
shoes come in contact with it.
NOTE—In addition to the places specially mentioned, note carefully and oil all
of the small connections and joints throughout the car, such as the various connecting
rod ends, and the joints in the brake mechanism.
Remember that wherever one part moves in contact with another, the ease of
movement will be assisted by lubricant and that wear will be reduced to the minimum.
OIL PRESSURE REGULATOR WITH CAP REMOVED
The above adjustment should be made when the engine is warm and with the
engine running at minimum speed. Under these conditions, the overflow valve should
be so adjusted that the oil pressure is between five and eight pounds. Do not make
the above adjustment until the engine is thoroughly warm.
LUBRICATION CARD
A lubrication card is supplied with the tool kit.
This card is intended to be hung in the garage as a reminder.
