ROOFING The main accredited qualifications for roofing are Roofing Occupations SVQ to Level 3, Advanced Craft Roof Slating, Tiling and Cement Work, and the Roofing TAPs. There are a number of other qualifications which were also found to cover skills relevant to roofing, including HND Architectural Conservation, Carpentry & Joinery SVQ Level 3 and Advanced Craft, Bricklaying SVQ Level 3 and MES Domestic Plumbing Level 3. Roofing TAPS covers 68% of the wish-list skills, while Advanced Craft covers 76%. However, skills such as understanding the use of slate in terms of its geology is not covered even at Advanced Craft level. Nor are pantiles or rainwater goods amongst a number of other skills. Areas that appear to be under-represented in current training provision are predominantly traditional roof coverings including stone-slate roofs, traditional terracotta pan-tiles, and rosemary tiles, but also in a number of other important areas. Whilst it is recognised that many of the skills in relation to current roofing skills training are transferable, there is an evident lack of training specific to these areas.
