STAINED & LEADED GLASS
There are several qualifications relating to stained glass ranging from NQ to BSc
and postgraduate level. These courses are offered by a number of colleges,
although their primary focus is the design and production of new glass rather than
the repair of existing or historic glass. Some art and design courses also include
stained glass work, again it has not been possible to assess the degree to which
any historic work is examined or repair techniques discussed and implemented. No
accredited conservation-related courses are available in Scotland, though a number
of accredited courses are available in art glass design and decorative glass
production which are strongly art-oriented. Such courses in Scotland include:
• Edinburgh College of Art: runs a postgraduate Diploma and Masters Degree in
Glass. Also runs a Degree in Glass and Architectural Glass (Degree)
• Glasgow Metropolitan College: runs a HNC and HND in Art Glass Design
• North Glasgow College: runs a HND in Art Glass Production
A handful of stained glass conservation courses are run in England, by the
University of York and Swansea Metropolitan University for example.
