GLAZING
Glazing to traditional buildings encompasses a diverse range of window types and
materials, including sash and case windows, casement windows, fixed lights and
leaded lights. The need to have an understanding of these materials and
components is not restricted to glaziers alone; joiners also may need to have the
skills to replace damaged glass in timber window frames, and this is covered to a
basic level through the carpentry and joinery qualification route (SVQ).
This section deals specifically with timber and cast iron window frames. Leaded
lights are dealt with later in this report.
While both the Glazing Maintenance Level 2 and 3, and Glazing Installation level 2
and 3 each cover 86% of the wish-list skills, there are a number of key skills which
are not covered by current training provision. These include the conservation of
original material, the production and replacement of timber components and
glazing to iron structures and shopfronts. Understanding traditional glass types,
fixings, and methods (and related issues) of protection also do not appear to be
covered by current training provision, although sprigging may be covered by one
unit of the SVQ which covers “fit into frame”.
