CONCLUSION The results of this Scoping Exercise indicate that there is tremendous variation in the degree to which current qualifications address the needs of traditional building skills. The initial findings suggest that plastering, metal roofing and brickwork are the weakest in terms of qualification content relating specifically to traditional techniques, with over 40% of wish-list skills not covered by current qualifications in these areas. At the other end of the scale, the strongest trades appear to be carpentry & joinery, glazing and thatching, all of which have less than 18% of the wish-list skills not covered by current qualifications. However, these statistics are only one half of the story and should be viewed with caution; if thatching is taken as an example, while statistically this trade area is well covered by existing qualifications, there is no college in Scotland currently delivering the existing accredited thatching qualification. Equally, the statistics outlined in this report take into account both mandatory and optional units. In practice, colleges delivering these qualifications do not necessarily provide all of the optional units. While these statistics offer a good starting point for our understanding of qualifications delivery, there is more work to be done to identify the particular gaps that need to be addressed for specific trades before an overall strategy can be developed.
