TRADITIONAL METALWORKING The term traditional metalworking covers a broad range of skills and materials. However, for the purposes of this scoping exercise the authors have not included bronze or other non-ferrous metals (although many of the skills associated with ferrous metals apply to non-ferrous metals). Equally, while conservation engineering is an important sector for the repair and maintenance of traditional metalwork, however it was deemed too broad a skill-set to incorporate into this study as the term applies not only to metalwork but also a range of other materials including timber, stone and concrete. This report has focussed instead on blacksmithing (including wrought iron production) and iron founding. There is currently no accredited training provision in Scotland for traditional blacksmithing, wrought iron production or iron-founding (or conservation engineering). However, a number of qualifications are delivered in England relating either specifically or tangentially to some of these skills. Blacksmithing No accredited training in blacksmithing is delivered in Scotland, and only a handful of colleges in England deliver accredited blacksmithing training (outlined below). However, a Heritage Skills Blacksmithing NOS is currently being developed (March 2010), and it is probable that a new heritage blacksmithing qualification will arise from this. Hereford College has noted interest in developing such a qualification for delivery at that college, but it is uncertain at this point whether there will be any uptake amongst colleges in Scotland. In addition to the Heritage Skills Blacksmithing NOS, a number of Units exist which form part of the Blacksmith Option Route of the Heritage Skills (Construction) Level 3 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification).
