STONEMASONRY The main qualifications for stonemasonry are Stonemasonry TAPs, Advanced Craft and the NPA Masonry Conservation. While the TAPS covers just 13% of the wishlist of skills, if an individual continues to Advanced Craft, this percentage rises to 41% . This still leaves a shortfall of 59% of wishlist skills not being taught to Stonemasonry apprentices. However, if an individual continues on to complete the National Progression Award in Conservation Masonry, this increases again to 78%. There is potential for the remaining 22% to be covered by a future PDA which has yet to be developed. The wishlist skills that are not covered by any currently available qualification are important ones; the ability to point masonry below 5 mm is an essential skill to retaining the character of many traditional masonry buildings. Of perhaps even greater importance is a sound understanding of stone-matching, a skill which is not presently covered by any qualification.
