Table 2: The diagnosis of disease patterns of referred Aceh’s tsunami
victims at Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, from December 27, 2004 to
January 12, 2005
Due to a limited number of manpower, the
healthcare services were performed by doctors
and nurses from various countries
simultaneously. At Zainoel Abidin Hospital for
example, once, paramedics from 11 countries
worked together hand in hand, a true
international hospital. Other hospitals in Banda
Aceh, Kosdam Hospital and Fakinah Hospital,
were also served by paramedics from various
countries at the same time.
Paramedics’ various nationality had several
impacts on the patients. One of them was
communication difficulty due to language
barrier, especially since few patients could only
speak Acehnese. The way they conduct the
healthcare services, theoretically and in practice,
might also have an impact on the patients. On
the other hand, however, there was “transfer of
knowledge” among working paramedics. From
the experience, it seemed that the transfer of
knowledge went smoothly. Several Indonesian
surgeons and gynaecologists were operating
together with Australian doctors. The same
happened with our nurses who worked with
nurses from Singapore, etc.
One matter that we have to take under
consideration is the education continuation for
all the medical, nursing and other health
officials (paramedic) schools students in Aceh.
Their university and school buildings were
destroyed, not to mention the laboratory.
Teaching Hospital did not function at its
maximum capacity, significant number of
lecturers were perished or moved out of town.
To recover the condition, actions such as
inviting guest lecturers, rehabilitating medical
schools facilities and temporarily sending Aceh’s
medical students to other medical schools
outside Aceh have to be taken.
Patients
Some patients came to the hospital alone,
without any family member at their sides. They
might be the only survivor in their family. Some
