Trojan Sentry 2
Pour cette Italie …
Trojan Sentry 1
Où nous devons jouir du fruit de nos travaux.
Both
En nous faisant rompre les os!
Trojan Sentry 2
Encor pâtir!
Trojan Sentry 1
Encor pâtir!
Notre lot est l’obéissance.
Trojan Sentry 2
Silence!
Je vois Énée à grands pas accourir.
(Les deux sentinelles s’éloignent et disparaissent.)
And all for this Italy …
Where we’re to enjoy the fruits of our labours.
By breaking our backs!
To go through it all again!
To go through it all again!
It’s orders, orders all the time.
Be quiet!
Aeneas is coming.
(The two sentries withdraw and disappear.)
No 41: Récitatif et Air
Aeneas
Me rappelant l’ordre des dieux,
Invoqué la grandeur de ma sainte entreprise,
L’avenir de mon fils et le sort des Troyens,
La triomphale mort par les destins promise,
Pour couronner ma gloire aux champs ausoniens;
Rien n’a pu la toucher; sans vaincre son silence
J’ai fui de son regard la terrible éloquence.
Ah! quand viendra l’instant des suprêmes adieux,
Heure d’angoisse et de larmes baignée,
Comment subir l’aspect affreux
De cette douleur indignée?
(Hurrying, in great agitation)
Futile regrets! I must leave Carthage.
Dido knows. Her terror, her amazement
When she learned it have shattered my nerve …
But I must, it has to be!
No, I cannot forget how her fair face
Turned deathly pale;
She would not say a word but her eyes
Stared and blazed darkly.
In vain I told her of the countless portents
Which remind me of the gods’ command,
Invoked the greatness of my sacred mission,
My son’s future and the destiny of the Trojans,
The heroic death, promised by the fates,
That is to crown my glory on the Ausonian fields;
Nothing moved her. I could not break her silence,
And I fled from the terrible power of her look.
But ah! when the moment comes for the last farewell,
Moment of anguish and tears unstinted,
How to bear the dreadful sight
Of her indignant grief?
