No 39: Récitatif et Choeur
Panthus, The Chieftains
Chaque jour voit grandir la colère des dieux.
Des signes effrayants déjà nous avertissent;
La mer, les monts, les bois rofonds gémissent;
Sous d’invisibles coups nos armes retentissent;
Comme dans Troie en la fatale nuit,
Hector, dont l’œil courroucé luit,
En armes apparaît; un chœur d’ombres le suit;
Et ces morts irrités
La nuit dernière encore ont crié trois fois –
The Ghost of Hector
Italie! Italie! Italie!
Panthus, The Chieftains
Dieux vengeurs! c’est leur voix! …
Nous avons trop longtemps bravé l’ordre céleste;
Quittons sans plus tarder ce rivage funeste!
A demain! à demain!
Préparons tout, il faut partir enfin.
(Ils entrent dans les tentes.)
(Panthus and the Trojan chieftains enter.)
Get everything ready, we must leave.
In vain Aeneas
With despair beholds the agony of the Queen;
Glory and duty will be able to break his chain,
And his heart will be firm at the moment of farewell.
Each day the wrath of the gods grows greater.
Already ghastly portents warn us:
The sea, the mountains, the forests groan aloud;
Invisible blows make our armour ring.
As in Troy on the fatal night,
Hector in arms is seen,
His angry eyes aglow; a chorus of spirits follow him,
And these same wrathful dead
Last night again cried out three times –
Italy! Italy! Italy!
Avenging gods! That is their voice!
Too long have we defied the divine command.
Let us leave this ill-omened coast without delay.
Tomorrow! tomorrow!
Get everything ready, we must leave.
(They go inside the tents.)
No 40: Duo
(Les deux sentinelles marchent, l’un de droite à gauche, l’autre de
gauche à droite. Ils s’arrêtent de temps en temps l’un près de l’autre
vers le milieu du théâtre.)
Trojan Sentry 1
Par Bacchus! ils sont fous
avec leur Italie!
Je n’ai rien entendu.
Trojan Sentry 2
Ni moi.
(The two sentries march up and down, one from right to left, the other
from left to right. From time to time they stop near one another in the
middle of the stage.)
By Bacchus, they’re mad,
with their ‘Italy’.
I haven’t heard anything.
Nor have I.
