Swimming contests will be held at the
community center pool.
All profits from the three-day festival
will be donated to tfae community center
building fund.
The Raider swimming team will Invite
local schools like Mainland Regional, Holy
Spirit and Atlantic Qty to Join it in a meet
that will feature a teamchampfcn plus the
naming of an individual champion in each
event. Separate competitions will be held
for boys and girls in certain events.
Ultimately the festival would like to
have three visiting schools bring their
boys' basketball, girls' basketball and
wrestling teams with them, thereby
creating a situation In which the same four
schools would compete In three different
sports.
One of the three visiting schools would
be a representative from the Southern
Division of the South Jersey Conference.
The other two would come from different
parts of South Jersey.
In addition, the proposal calls for the
development of competition for pre-Mgh
school athletes from the Ocean City High
School sending districts. That could include
.special wrestling matches, swimming
races and junior high school
basketball tournaments.
There has not been a Christmas tournament
in Ocean City since Dixie Howell's
last Christmas Jamboree in 1961. That was
a mini-tournament that saw four teams
play shortened games. The entire competition
was completed in one night
Tentative ticket plans for the Winter
Festival call for individual admissions to
be charged for each event A ticket would
be available, however, that could admit
fee purchaser to all three days of competition
at a reduced rate.
In addition to giving local sports fana an
interesting attraction over the holidays
and raising more funds for the expansion
of the community center, the Winter
Festival would also assure local athletes
of an uninterrupted season without ruining
holiday plans by traveling elsewhere to
play.
A publication designed to keep memories alive
By CHARLESM. THOMPSON JR.
Editor
It was three years ago when someone
Ralph Waldo
Emeraaumi
The idea was conceived nearly four
years ago during tfae celebration of the
country's 2D0th birthday and was
originally unveiled at tfae onset of this
city's centennial celebration.
It faced cheers and Jem, political
controversy and economic salvoes.
Its doors were first opened Memorial
Day, 1979 and was named tfae Ocean City
Community Center.
It consisted of a &meter, six-lane
swimming pool and a large meeting room
and was constructed with fl mQElon
dollars in funds milked from the federal
Economic Developmental Administration
with the aid of U.S. Rep. Wiliam J.
Hughes {D-2ad>. That was phase one.
On Sunday, June 15 the dedication of
phase two of the recreational facility was
held.
Congressman Hughes and Ocean City
Mayor Cheater J. WImberg were on hand
The cornerstone was laid and a
memorial plaque was unveiled commemorating
those who pledged the money
for phase two.
"Phase two," explained Recreation
Commissioner Carolyn Murphy, "consists
of an adult lounge, the large meeting
room, the newly opened racquet ball
courts, sauna, and whirlpool as well as the
weight and exercise room."
In 1976 the Ocean City Bicentennial
Horizons Committee bralnstormed the
idea of buUding such a recreational
facility for the citizens of tfae community.
By June of OT7, with the aid of
Congressman Hughes and other government
officials, nearly fl.S minion was
granted by the EDA from a federal public
works fund law for the construction of the
center.
However, soon after that the EDA cut
that funding more than 1900,000 only to
Mke that to fl million after Hughes
pressured the agency, and phase one was
built.
