You can get detailed information on making a new lawn or renovating an established ben from your Cape May County agricultural agent PAINTING CONTRACTOR INTERIOR • EXTERIOR K.R. BRECKLEY 319-2517 Homeowners may not be too concerned when they see Uwn moths take flight in the evening when they walk on ttieir lawns, but the presence of these whitish, gray of brown cigar shaped insects may also mean a battle with sod webworm, Sod webworms are green or brown caterpillars that later become lawn moths during Uiiir Ufa cycle. The moths hide in shrubbery and lawn grass during ttie day. They flyat ni$it and may deposit their eggs m flight or while at rest, These yellowish white egp hatch in about one week and become sod webworms that build burrows and tunnels in the turf and feed on grass blades at night. Sod webworm damage first appears as brown "trails" orirregular brown spots in the lawn. These "trails" expand to become large brown areas of severly damaged or destroyed grass. Sod webworms prefer new lawns. 4 They also attack bentgrass, fescue, and bluegrass. Insecticides eafbaryl (Sevin) or dlazinon or Cur. sban offer good control and are avilable In various formutations. Purchase the one ftat best suits your needs. Still Serving You BROOKS T.V. TV & Radio Repairs Electronic Servicing Phone 399-1242 Probably the most dtfflcult Job for amateur and professional vegetable growers alike is that of identifying conditions that adversely affect crops. Without an accurate diagnosis of a plant symptom, it is Impossible to take corrective measures. Cooperative Extension Service county agents can be helpful in offering professional advice. The extension office number of your county can usually be found under "county government" in the telephone directory, The gardener can often identify a vegetable malady himself by asking the following questions; Is It a disease problem? Any evidence of insects? Possibly a physical condition brought on by weather conditions. Have I done something wrong in the culture of the crop? Too Old To Be Homesick? r t< While it is not possible In this article to outline diagnostic procedures in detail, the following major symptoms should help. Disease: Generally symptoms wU not be uniform in the planting and one disease will not affect all crops. Look for dead areas on leaves, of stems. These generally indicate a blight. Cut a branch or stem with a sharp knife and note It there is a circular area that shows discoloration. This would suggest a disease attacking feewater conducting system of the plant. This Is generally accompanied by wilting of file foliage. If leaves are distorted or dwarfed and show a mosaic like pattern, you probably have a virus disease. Look for presence of insects on foliage, in stems or on roots. Be sure to check the under side of leaves. Look for signs of feeding, either by chewing Insects or sucking insects. Different control measures are required for ttiese two groups of Insects. Physical conditions: After eliminating diseases and insects as probable causes, consider whether someunusual conditions have occurred. Dry soil conditions on cause blossom-end rot in tomatoes and tip-burn in lettuce. Night temperatures of SO degrees F or higher can cause blossom drop in peppers and tomatoes with the result that the plants become extremely vegetative and produce very few fruits. Premature seeding of lettuce, carrots and onions can be cause cause caused by adverse weaflier. Cultural practices: Nutrient deficiencies often occur if the gardener does not have a sou test and follow recommendations (Contact your Cooperative Extension office for information on soil testing). Nitrogen deficiency will first appear as yellowing of lower leaves on plants, phosphorous deficiency will stunt the plant ad boron deficiency will produce dead tissue, especially in the new buds. A heavy day soil which has riot been improved with organic matter will stunt the growth of carrots and otter not crops. Growing fruiting crips, such as tomatoes and peppers In the shade will result in poor yield and inferior quality. Diagnosis of plant problems can often become complicated because a given symptom, say yellowing of leaves, can result fromany one of several unrelated causes. The gardener should look for a pattern tothe symptoms. For Instance, sometimes a disease will be found on plants growing In a low spot In th garden, or plant damage may occur when vegetables are grown close to walks or house foundations. You can make Identification of vegetable problems much easier and take the proper control measures If you obtain a free copy of the leaflet New Jersey Vegetable Pert Control Recommendations far Jfctne Gardens from your Cape May County Extension Service office (465-5115). The best season of the year to improve the lawn to overcome these problems is now. Our recommended grasses — the bluegrasses, improved perennial ryegrasses and the fine leaved fescues — germinate best when the soil Is warm and moist, and they grow best as it becomes cooler and more moist. The long growing period of late summer, fall, early winter and spring gives the brat growing weather and the longest period of recovery for our northern passes. During this extended favorable growing season, your summer blighted lawn may recover on Its own. It may be much better, however, to assist the lawn to shorten the recovery period and take advantage of the more desirable weather. Heat and drought! The natural tendency of our lawn grasses i to go dormant during hot, dry periods. If no artificial irrigation Is applied this ia normally what happens during the hot, dry summer. Most of these lawns would improve without help Just as soon as the weather cools and there Is adequate moisture. Mowing your lawn Ugh two to 2M, inches) and maintaining sufficient limestone in the sol help to make sure your lawn would make it through a hot.dry summer without artificial irrigation. Diseases and insects; Summer lawn diseases such as the crown rot stage of leaf spot, summer brown patch, fusarium blight, pythium blight, dollar spot and fairy ring can cause considerable damage towell kept lawns or to neglected lawns. • However, most of the time they seem toattack the beat kept lawns. They can be 'minimized by avoiding exoessive fertilization, watering deeply infrequently, and by snowing high. The insects that cause the most problems during the summer are chinch bugg andsod webworms. Even zoysla lawns, which do exceptionally well during the summer, as subject to these devastating insects. Usually we do not recommend treating to control these insects until we know they are present. Once you have establsbed that they are present, they well very soon after application to wet the soil several inches deep. This also helps to get ths fertilizer off fee leaf surfaceand in contact with the roots where it is needed, B your lawn has net completely healed by October, fertilize again togive it more vigor and density for next year. Uming: If no lime has been used for several years, a fall Uming in September should be scheduled. It might be good to have your soil tested. Sou test mailer bags cost |4 and are available at your Cape May County Cooperative Extension office. Take several samples four to five Inches deep from scattered spots on the lawn. Mii these together, then let them dry for several days before having it tested. If you just want to add limestone, then add about 50 . pounds of ground agricultural limestone per 1,000 square fcet. There are several otter types of limestone available. Granular limestone is probably the most popular and most frequently found in the garden centers. It Is easily spread, but to me, it seem* slike It takes longer to act and perhaps a lit tie more material for each application. Another newer type of limestone called pelletiief limestone seemsto be very easy to apply. It also works much faster man the ground agricultural limestone or the granular limestone. It la somewhat more expensive but probably worth the extra expense hi convenience and reseedlng are toget more ft plants In th area or to get new improved varieties into the town which are more disease tolerant and which require less fertilizer. Don't seed on top of grass or thatch as most of th seed would be wasted.
