University that helped make<br />

The first fruit experiments<br />

began back at the Rutgers<br />

College Farm back in 1170 and<br />

tor the past 100 years have<br />

been carried on by the New<br />

Jersey Agricultural Esperlment<br />

Station at New<br />

Jersey's Sate University.<br />

Now a part <strong>of</strong> Rutgers 1 Cook<br />

College, the station is<br />

celebrating its centennial this<br />

year.<br />

<strong>On</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the station's greatest<br />

peach success stories dates to<br />

1964 when the world-famous<br />

Bake peach was introduced.<br />

It wai the rtition'i 14th<br />

named peach variety and It<br />

honors the memory <strong>of</strong><br />

Maurice A, make, a station<br />

researcher whose name is<br />

also carried by the building<br />

housing Cook College's<br />

department <strong>of</strong> horticulture<br />

and <strong>for</strong>estry.<br />

Since then, a dozen more<br />

peach varieties have been<br />

introduced and named at the<br />

station, Incuding the famous<br />

Jerieyland and Sunhlgh<br />

Much <strong>of</strong> the development<br />

work in this area has been<br />

done at the station by Dr. L,<br />

Fredric Hough <strong>of</strong> Bloomsbury,<br />

who worked closely<br />

Jersey apple crop is harvested.<br />

Is named <strong>for</strong> the wife <strong>of</strong> a<br />

graduate student who tried<br />

one and said it was the best<br />

apple she's ever eaten, said<br />

Dr. Hough.<br />

Some Just-pattented disease<br />

and Insect-resistant apple<br />

varieties are Jonafree, Sir<br />

Prize and Frima, he said,<br />

"New Jersey has been a<br />

pUot plant <strong>for</strong> Innovation in<br />

fruit growing," said Dr.<br />

Hough, "Because <strong>of</strong> the<br />

strong history <strong>of</strong> research and<br />
