fruit are unaware of the years
of patient work at Rutgers
University that helped make
(his favorite crop so delicious
and plentiful.
The first fruit experiments
began back at the Rutgers
College Farm back in 1170 and
tor the past 100 years have
been carried on by the New
Jersey Agricultural Esperlment
Station at New
Jersey's Sate University.
Now a part of Rutgers 1 Cook
College, the station is
celebrating its centennial this
year.
One of the station's greatest
peach success stories dates to
1964 when the world-famous
Bake peach was introduced.
It wai the rtition'i 14th
named peach variety and It
honors the memory of
Maurice A, make, a station
researcher whose name is
also carried by the building
housing Cook College's
department of horticulture
and forestry.
Since then, a dozen more
peach varieties have been
introduced and named at the
station, Incuding the famous
Jerieyland and Sunhlgh
Much of the development
work in this area has been
done at the station by Dr. L,
Fredric Hough of Bloomsbury,
who worked closely

Is named for the wife of a
graduate student who tried
one and said it was the best
apple she's ever eaten, said
Dr. Hough.

and Insect-resistant apple
varieties are Jonafree, Sir
Prize and Frima, he said,

strong history of research and
