Romantic visions of
Lawr§nci y of Arabia are
quickly replaced by the
reality of shoveling the sand
back onto the beach.
Then, once the backbreaking
work Is finished,
ocean breezes begin blowing construct two feet
fee (and back into the yards.
Obviously, pulling loose
send back from the beachfront
bulkhead will only
temporarily postpone the
inevitable blowing of the sand
back into the yards.
Many beachfront dwellers
high
wooden barriers on top of the
bulkhead to keep the sand out
cf their yards during the
winter. However, when ftf
owners take the barriers
down to allow summer beach
access, the "door" is op«n for
Mowing sand,
Short of mevuig out, what
other remedies are available ?
When the wind to blowing
sand experience has shown
Out slowing the wind causa
It to drop port of its sand load.
Veteran beachcombers note
on those windy days that
natural debris (stones, shells,
dead marsh grass) scattered
all over the beach traps and
accumulates small piles of
sand.
So, an inexpensive and
readily available remedy is to
gather up this beach
debris and spread it out
over the beach in front of
beachfront property.
Much of the beachfront
property owner's sand
problem is caused by the
bulkhead which is meant to
protect thdr homes from high
Mm, That billhead acts as the
primary windbreak slowing
fte wind and causing sand to
be dropped into the beach*
front yards.
However, if you can create
a windbreak out on the beach
away from the bulkhead, then
you an cause the wind to
drop some of Its sand load out
on the beach rather than In
your yard.
For example, snow fence
has been used all over South
Jersey and is Infect one of the
best methods for trapping
Research by Rutgers
University has resulted in
rates of 12 to 20 cubic feet of
and trapped per linear foot of
fence in tot first year after
installation. „-
If you had 60 feet of frontage
to cover, you could expect up
to 1000 cubic feet of sand to be
tapped in the first par.
The fencing is available in
50 foot rolls at roughly »20 per
roll.
Township Clerk Barbara
charging tte establishment
with "intruding upon the
rights of others" with Its
alleged noise, illegal parking
and community disruption by
the bar patrons.
A letter from nearby
resident to the establishment,
William J. McCutcheon of
Bayview Drive and Wfflard
Av., accused the taproom's
patron of the "intrusion of
rights" and disturbing the
peace with the loud entertainment
"serenading the
neighborhood."
"The band and vocalist
might at well be in bed with
you," the letter read, adding
that patrons park fflegatty
and Utter the area with beer
bottles.
However it is the illegal
parting that may not, only be
disturbing the residents but
also creating a safety haxard.
It was reported that patrons
to the inn are parking ttieir
vehiclesnear the bulkhead as
well as blocking the roadway.
Waldron noted that hi the
event of an emergency,
police, ambulance and fire
equipment couldn't respond if
the roads near the DeauvOle
were blocked with cars.
Ihe committee Instructed
Waldron to draw up an ordinance
to prohibit puking In
the center of the street and at
the bulkhead.
"It was more or kss understood,"
Commltteeman
Daniel Beyel toW Vw Sentirwl-Ledger,
explaining that
in most cases people know not
to park hi such an area.
However, there are no signs to
the contrary.
Bevel added that the ordinance
will "put it down hi
black and white" and signs
will be posted to prohibit the
parking. Parallel parking,
however, will still be allowed
on both sides of the street
since many residents do not
have off-fltreet parking.
In addition, the committee
heard related complaints In
regard to the rexaning a
portion of Bayview Drive
from its current resortresidential
to a proposed
resort-commercial.
This ordinance was Introduced
by the township
that subsequently allowed
another drinking establishment,
the Bayview Inn, to
operate on a ptace-to-place
Currently the mayor and
