Holy Trinity Episcopal Church
It Is getting near to that time of year when our visitors
depart. Hie natives are accustomed to breathe a sigh of
relief and welcome the return of peace and quiet to our
island, while at the same time being thankful to
Providence far the material blessings which come with
the tourist season. As it is commonly said, we're glad to
see them come, and we're glad to see mem go. Perhaps
bom of those feelings are quite appropriate.
There are times in ow lives when each of us wishes to be
with others. People find dances attractive, they find
bargain sabs inviting, they find an athletic stadium full of
cheering people thrilling, and they find a full church inspiring.
They cherish family reunions in which they can
rub elbows with the cousins and me inlaws. There are
very few of us to whom the desire to be with people Is a
stranger. There is also another side to our nature. After
the wedding reception we want to be alone win our
husband or wife. After the funeral we want to be alone
with our grief. After the shower tor the new baby we are
content to be alone In our happiness. And part of the
spiritual life for many of us consists of times when we
want to be very much alone with our God...in private
prayer or meditation, on retreat, or Just thinking about
Hm.
The life of Jesus of Nazareth displays this same kind of
ambivalence. He was delighted to be among the five
thousand whom He fed. He preached to the crowds from a
boat. He thrilled to the welcome of the Palm Sunday
procession. And at other times He went up into the
mountains to be alone to pray. Perhaps most of the major
religious figures have at various times dlspalyed this
same effect. They have at times been seen as a part of the
community of the people of God, delighting in the company
of fellow men and perhaps taking advantage of the
situation to bear their witness. And at other times they,
like us, have been content when the crowds have gone
away and they can enjoy the soUHtude, the silence, and
(he beauty undlstracted. Each is important in its time.
Part of our spiritual maturity comes when we know which
to seek, when, and why.
