Fergus<strong>on</strong> created statements that he felt referred to abstract ma<strong>the</strong>matics topics. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

populati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> study c<strong>on</strong>sisted <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 365 undergraduates enrolled in <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> eighteen<br />

randomly chosen ma<strong>the</strong>matics classes at a large southwestern community college.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> results <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> factor analysis listed <strong>the</strong> three comp<strong>on</strong>ents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

anxiety as ma<strong>the</strong>matics test anxiety, numerical anxiety, and abstracti<strong>on</strong> anxiety.<br />

Fergus<strong>on</strong> defines abstracti<strong>on</strong> anxiety as "<strong>the</strong> anxiety associated with specific ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

topics" (p. 149).<br />

In a 1995 study, Bessant found six comp<strong>on</strong>ents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ma<strong>the</strong>matics anxiety. An 80-<br />

item versi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> MARS was used. Since this study was d<strong>on</strong>e at a Canadian university,<br />

MARS items pertaining to <strong>the</strong> United States, such as miles and W-2 form, were deleted.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> 173 university students that participated were enrolled in <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> three introductory<br />

statistics courses. All participants completed a 35-item ma<strong>the</strong>matics attitude scale and<br />

<strong>the</strong> MARS. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> six factors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> math anxiety found in this study were general evaluati<strong>on</strong><br />

anxiety, everyday numerical anxiety, passive observati<strong>on</strong> anxiety, performance anxiety,<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matics test anxiety, and problem-solving anxiety. (Bessant, 1995)<br />
