Ma<strong>the</strong>matics achievement. Ma<strong>the</strong>matics achievement was measured using <strong>the</strong><br />

first exam for <strong>the</strong> College Algebra course. All four secti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> course took <strong>the</strong> same<br />

exam. Two forms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> exam were used. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> order <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>s was <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

difference between <strong>the</strong> two forms. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> exam c<strong>on</strong>tained 20 questi<strong>on</strong>s, and a score <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 100<br />

points was possible. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> College Algebra exam can be found in Appendix 2.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Background</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Music</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> background music used was <str<strong>on</strong>g>Music</str<strong>on</strong>g> for <strong>the</strong> Mozart <str<strong>on</strong>g>Effect</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Volume I<br />

Streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Mind. Campbell (1997) suggests that listening to classical music by<br />

Mozart can improve c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>, memory, and spatial percepti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Procedures<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants were asked to complete <strong>the</strong> 25-item MARS during <strong>the</strong> week prior<br />

to <strong>the</strong> exam. After <strong>the</strong> students arrived to take <strong>the</strong> exam, <strong>the</strong> door was closed and <strong>the</strong><br />

students were given 10 minutes to study. Both <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol group and <strong>the</strong> experimental<br />

group were asked not to talk during this time. During this 10-minute study period for <strong>the</strong><br />

experimental group, background music was played. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol group studied 10 minutes<br />

in silence. When <strong>the</strong> 10-minute study period was over, <strong>the</strong> music was turned <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f for <strong>the</strong><br />

experimental group. Both groups were given <strong>the</strong> exam. After each student completed <strong>the</strong><br />

exam and turned it in, he or she was given <strong>the</strong> 25-item MARS to complete again.<br />

Research Design and Statistical Analysis<br />

As noted previously, <strong>the</strong> research questi<strong>on</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> present investigati<strong>on</strong> were <strong>the</strong><br />
