<strong>Anxiety</strong> level. Researchers have studied <strong>the</strong> effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> background music <strong>on</strong><br />

various types <strong>on</strong> anxiety. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are differing c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> music <strong>on</strong> state<br />

and trait anxiety. Davis and Thaut (1989) used <strong>the</strong> Spielberger State <strong>Anxiety</strong> Inventory<br />

and a seven-point Likert type scale for relaxati<strong>on</strong> to measure anxiety and relaxati<strong>on</strong><br />

before and after listening to background music. No tasks were performed by <strong>the</strong> 18<br />

undergraduates participants during <strong>the</strong> study. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants completed <strong>the</strong> inventories,<br />

were seated in recliners, listened to 20 minutes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> self-selected relaxing music, and<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> inventories a sec<strong>on</strong>d time. A decrease in state anxiety and an increase in<br />

relaxati<strong>on</strong> were reported. Similar results were obtained by Stoudenmire (1975). He<br />

found that muscle relaxati<strong>on</strong> and background music reduced state anxiety, but nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

treatment reduced trait anxiety. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> Speilberger State-Trait <strong>Anxiety</strong> Inventory was<br />

completed by 108 undergraduates at <strong>the</strong> beginning and end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each sessi<strong>on</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> students<br />

were randomly assigned to <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> two treatment groups. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> students relaxed in<br />

recliners while ei<strong>the</strong>r listening to background music or performing muscle relaxati<strong>on</strong><br />

techniques.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> previous two studies did not use task performance situati<strong>on</strong>s. Summers,<br />

H<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fman, Neff, Hans<strong>on</strong>, and Pierce (1990) measured <strong>the</strong> test anxiety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nursing students<br />

during an exam. Results indicated that background music had no significant effect <strong>on</strong><br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r state or trait anxiety. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> tempo <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> music was 60 beats per minute. Twelve <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>the</strong> 21 students indicated that <strong>the</strong> music did not make <strong>the</strong>m feel more relaxed during <strong>the</strong><br />

testing situati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> physical effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> background music <strong>on</strong> university students during a final<br />

exam was <strong>the</strong> subject <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blanchard’s 1979 study. Students that listened to music during
