that <strong>the</strong> students who received <strong>the</strong> stressful instructi<strong>on</strong>s first scored higher than <strong>the</strong> people<br />

who received stressful instructi<strong>on</strong>s during sessi<strong>on</strong> two. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir anxiety likely increased<br />

during <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d sessi<strong>on</strong> and depressed <strong>the</strong>ir math performance.<br />

Hembree (1988) researched 562 test anxiety studies and performed a metaanalysis<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> studies. Some comm<strong>on</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental changes were found as anxietyreducing<br />

techniques (HTA stands for high test anxiety, LTA stands for low test anxiety):<br />

C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s that seem to enhance <strong>the</strong> performance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> HTA<br />

students include low-stress instructi<strong>on</strong>s (at <strong>the</strong> college<br />

level), provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> memory support, minimal distracti<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

and background music. LTA students functi<strong>on</strong> best under<br />

ego-involving instructi<strong>on</strong>s, an easy-to-read test item<br />

arrangement, and no music during tests (p. 73).<br />

Interventi<strong>on</strong>s. Relaxati<strong>on</strong> treatments have been researched as an interventi<strong>on</strong> for<br />

test anxiety. Cohen (1994) used 126 practical nursing students as <strong>the</strong> participants in this<br />

study. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants were am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> students in seven class secti<strong>on</strong>s in a practical<br />

nursing program. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Test</strong> Attitude Inventory by Spielberger was used to measure test<br />

anxiety. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> relaxati<strong>on</strong> treatment included muscle tensing and relaxing, imaging, and<br />

s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tly-played baroque-style music. Two c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s drawn, as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cohen’s study,<br />

were that <strong>the</strong> relaxati<strong>on</strong> treatment was effective in reducing test anxiety and <strong>the</strong> scores <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> in-class <strong>the</strong>ory exam improved after <strong>the</strong> relaxati<strong>on</strong> treatment.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> soothing music was compared to aerobic exercise in <strong>the</strong> research <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
