group between lower anxiety and higher anxiety students (Low <strong>Anxiety</strong>, n = 24, M =<br />

81.67, SD = 17.36; High <strong>Anxiety</strong>, n = 15, M = 78.53, SD = 20.82). This interacti<strong>on</strong> is<br />

Internal C<strong>on</strong>sistency <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> MARS<br />

In 1989, Alexander and Martray designed an abbreviated versi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> MARS.<br />

To develop this 25-item versi<strong>on</strong>, Alexander and Martray (1989) performed a factor<br />

analysis <strong>on</strong> a 69-item abbreviated versi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> original 98-item MARS. An internal<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistency alpha coefficient <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.97 was reported by Alexander and Martray for <strong>the</strong> 69-<br />

item versi<strong>on</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> present study <strong>the</strong> internal c<strong>on</strong>sistency was studied using <strong>the</strong><br />

participants pre-exam MARS scores for <strong>the</strong> 25-item versi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> MARS. An internal<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistency alpha coefficient <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.96 was calculated.<br />

Summary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Findings<br />

Hypo<strong>the</strong>sis 1A was that <strong>the</strong>re would not be a significant difference in <strong>the</strong> preexam<br />

anxiety scores between <strong>the</strong> experimental and c<strong>on</strong>trol groups as measured by <strong>the</strong><br />

MARS. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> findings indicated support for this hypo<strong>the</strong>sis. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> students in <strong>the</strong> music<br />

interventi<strong>on</strong> group did not differ from <strong>the</strong> students in <strong>the</strong> silence group in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> preexam<br />

anxiety scores.<br />

Hypo<strong>the</strong>sis 1B was that <strong>the</strong>re would be a statistically significant difference in <strong>the</strong><br />

pre-exam anxiety and <strong>the</strong> post-exam anxiety scores <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> experimental groups as<br />

measured by <strong>the</strong> MARS. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> findings indicated support for this hypo<strong>the</strong>sis. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

students in <strong>the</strong> music interventi<strong>on</strong> group reduced <strong>the</strong>ir anxiety scores from <strong>the</strong> pre-exam<br />

inventory to <strong>the</strong> post-exam inventory.
