CHAPTER 4<br />

Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> present study was designed to investigate <strong>the</strong> effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> background music,<br />

played prior to an exam, <strong>on</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics test anxiety and academic achievement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

college algebra students. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants were 160 college students enrolled in College<br />

Algebra. A ten minute study period was given before <strong>the</strong> first course exam. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

group studied in silence while <strong>the</strong> experimental group was exposed to classical<br />

background music. Two research questi<strong>on</strong>s and 4 hypo<strong>the</strong>ses were examined in <strong>the</strong><br />

study. In this chapter <strong>the</strong> results <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> research questi<strong>on</strong>s and hypo<strong>the</strong>ses are discussed,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n limitati<strong>on</strong>s and suggesti<strong>on</strong>s for future research are given.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> first research questi<strong>on</strong> posed c<strong>on</strong>sidered if <strong>the</strong> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> background music<br />

played while students study 10 minutes prior to an exam, as opposed to <strong>the</strong> students<br />

studying in silence 10 minutes prior to an exam, reduced <strong>the</strong> level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ma<strong>the</strong>matics test<br />

anxiety. Two hypo<strong>the</strong>ses were used to investigate this questi<strong>on</strong>. First, no difference was<br />

predicted in <strong>the</strong> pre-exam anxiety scores between students that studied to music and those<br />

that studied in silence. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> present data c<strong>on</strong>firms this predicti<strong>on</strong>. Sec<strong>on</strong>dly, a difference<br />

was predicted in <strong>the</strong> pre-exam anxiety scores and <strong>the</strong> post-exam anxiety scores <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />

students that studied to music. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> present study found a significant decrease between<br />

pre- and post-exam MARS scores for students that studied to music 10 minutes prior to<br />

an exam.<br />

Research varies <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> background music to relieve anxiety.<br />

Hardie (1990) tested <strong>the</strong> level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> anxiety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> college students during two testing situati<strong>on</strong>s.
