The Imig’s large cow herd has long been accepted as one of the most uniform and functional production herds in the USA. Roger Imig showed and sold the Grand Champion steer at the 1948 Nebraska State Fair and with the proceeds he purchased his first registered Hereford female. Increase in pounds per calf as a result of a top performing bull. x Number of cows bred per year x Average selling price of calves for four years = Extra dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull that will add 30 pounds x 4 years = 3,000 pounds x $1.10 = $3,300. This bull is then worth $3,300 more than a bull who keeps your weaning weights the same. This is only half or less of the equation because you get the advantage of the replacement females. All good cattlemen that watch their cows know how much better those consistent top end cows do than herd average. Another big bonus is their fertility and longevity because these are worth more dollars than weaning weights. Another plus can be a result of selecting genetics out of programs that create labor efficiency in cows by having cows with good dispositions and quality udders.
