Semen and embryos were allowed to be shipped so that was the way the U.S. breeders were using their Canadian genetics. Some of the prominent breeders in Canada told me that even though they were happy to keep the cattle to accommodate the sale, it was getting to be somewhat of a problem to keep them fed, safe, and find a pen for them. When the border did open, each person involved, seller and buyer, wanted the cattle delivered. In no way did I mean to imply that the cattle were not really sold, I just meant to say they could not be delivered because the border was closed to them. Deadline for the February issue of Hereford America is Jan. 5th My friend Jay Pearson from Idaho told me a couple of years ago, “I need to have the bull I bought in my pasture, because on our ranch natural breeding is our way of operation.” Now Jay’s bull can come to his new home. I am sorry if I did not explain this correctly in the last issue. We sold our Hereford steers this last week at the Beaverhead Livestock Auction in Dillon. The steers weighed 670# after a 50 mile haul. We were behind some of the Angus at the sale about 5-6 cents per pound. We did have a lot of people comment how nice a set of steers they were. I contacted the CHB buyer in the area but our group was too small for him and he did not bother to find more Herefords to go with them, even though I told him I knew of others in the area. Same old story there. The people at Beaverhead Livestock were honest with me and did their best to sell them well. Auctioneer John Anderson will not let them cut the Herefords out of the groups and so now they don’t ask, as they know the answer. Owner John Erb saw that the cattle were sold well. Thanks to this group, as not everyone is working with us, but let us know the good guys in the auction business that will work with us Hereford people to get a good price for the cattle.
