I set the schedule up for a day in November, during the week, and asked a friend who was in the Hereford business years ago, to go with me. His name was Remi Monforton. I loaded the bulls about 3:00 AM, picked up Remi and headed down the road. We delivered bulls along the way and things went along pretty well until early night when we were east of Billings and the weather started to turn bad. The temperature dropped to about 10 degrees below zero and the wind was picking up. We left the interstate at Miles City and headed toward Jordan, then onto Circle, to our final destination at Earl Jensen’s ranch. I don’t know if you have ever been to Jordan, but that is an awful lonely country. Fly across it at night and you can hardly see a light. Not many people are on these roads in the daytime but at night hardly any, usually! We hit the Visitors always welcome blizzard at Jordan, and the snow was coming down rapidly, the temperature was down to 20 below and the visibility was about 100 yards at times, and the wind was about 30 knots. I pulled up behind a snowplow and told Remi, “I am going to follow this guy as he probably knows where he is going.” Remi thought that was a good idea. As we were going down the highway about 25 miles per hour behind the snow plow, I noticed in my rear view mirror, that a bunch of cars were following us. I stopped to think about this next plan as I could hardly see the road, and got out of the truck. The guy behind me came around the truck and said, “My wife would like you to come back to the car and talk to her.” I said why does she want to talk to me? He said you will know in a minute. I walked around the truck and back to the car, and the woman rolled down her window and said, “I am very, very pregnant and will give birth pretty soon, so please don’t leave us out here in this blizzard! You wouldn’t do that to us would you? Please lead us into Circle.” I said, “Lady, I will not leave you in this storm and if I can get you to Circle, I will. It is about 50 miles yet and I do not know how bad the storm will be but I won’t leave you.” She smiled and said thanks. We counted the cars behind us at that time and we counted 26 sets of lights. By that time probably ten different drivers had come to get into the conversation, all of them men. I felt like Admiral Bird as the South Pole, but I had no dogs. We journeyed down the road at 20 to 30 miles per hour, as the storm would allow, and after about two and one half hours we entered Circle, with our convoy behind us, where I had a room reservation. All of the cars following us scattered out in Circle but the car behind us followed us to the motel. I went to check in to the motel and the lady at the motel said we are all sold out of rooms but we are holding your reservation Mr. Bayers. The face of the expectant father dropped, and said, “no more rooms,” to his wife. She started to cry and I said, “Lady, take my room, I will find a place to stay.” She and her husband both thanked us and said goodbye, and with that we left Circle to hit the storm and the road again, about 15 more miles to Jensen’s. About midnight we rolled into Jensen’s ranch and unloaded the bulls. Earl and Betty found us a room in their house. What a trip and what a night. I often wondered how the lady got along with her baby that night and where they came from or where they were going. We did not get their names, nor did I give them mine and I will never know, but I can just imagine in my thoughts how when this baby was to story-telling age her mother would tell her about the night in the great storm in Montana when a couple of guys in a cattle truck led them from harms way to a motel where they were safe. I think the baby would like that story, don’t you? I recently had a call from the lady of a prominent Canadian herd. She was not pleased with my article about the Canadian cattle finally being delivered to the U.S. She misunderstood the intent of my statement. If other breeders did too, let me re-explain. The Canadian Hereford industry has sold cattle to the United States during the border’s closure, usually saying that they would keep the cattle until the border (continued on page 22)
