The trick for the manufacturer of the product is to stay in business and make a profit. In visiting with many purebred and commercial producers the last few months it seems that we all want to produce that product (and that is viable goal) but can we stay in business long enough to do that? Our input costs over the last few years have risen tremendously and we need to come up with new and innovative ways to offset those input costs. In the general aviation industry back in the early ‘70s Piper Aircraft was facing a similar problem with the production of their aircraft. They built a very reliable aircraft model that is still thought of as one of their better aircraft even today but discontinued its production due to high manufacturing costs. The model that took its place was cheaper to build and maintain but didn’t have the performance or the quality the discontinued model had. Even though the change in model production kept them in business their competitors like Beech and Mooney were able to gain more of a market share for high performance singles even though the Piper was priced cheaper. I guess what I’m trying to say in comparing Piper’s production change with the production of beef is this. The beef industry in the ‘70s and ‘80s needed to provide a product that stayed competitive with pork, chicken and fish. The method used was to increase production (volume) so that the end product was more competitive in price with the other proteins. In so doing we gave up consistency and quality. Now, the beef industry, especially the Hereford, is paying for that gaff. Hindsight is always better than foresight, if we would have focused on production costs, efficiency and quality all at the same time instead of increasing our product volume alone the Hereford would still be at or near the top. It’s great that we are trying to improve our end product’s consistency and quality. But it seems like we are forgetting that we used to provide a consistent, quality product years ago. Let’s get back to that type of product, consistent and high quality, but this time we need to work harder on cheapening the input costs. We need to be more efficient in producing our product. I believe if we work on promoting the natural benefits of the Hereford, fertility, longevity, feed efficiency and disposition, and use these benefits correctly we can greatly improve the value of the Hereford within the beef industry. I have visited with several producers that have kept the Hereford traits in perspective and they have very little problem producing a product the consumer desires in consistency and quality. We know the public likes our end product but we need to promote to manufacturers (the beef producers) that the Hereford is an economical and beneficial resource to use for product production. I attended an annual production sale recently with a different method of selling each animal. They had the sale animals on display for all to see before the sale but during the sale the animal was shown on TV screens instead of being run into the ring. I had phone calls from people during the sale wanting my opinion on a specific lot. They were easy to go and locate – they were in the same place as they were before the sale. Another advantage was that less stress was put upon each animal because they didn’t have to come through the ring. We’ve all seen some real interesting action due to a bull or cow getting excited or scared due to all the noise, the auctioneer’s chant and ring men yelling, and people pushing cattle up the chute trying to keep the sale clipping along. Hey, I liked this new way! It just takes more planning up front and someone committed to doing it. At one of the many production sales I’ve been to this season I heard someone say, “Genetics are no better than the bull’s ability to deliver them.” How true! Every one of us needs to keep that in mind as we are choosing animals to purchase or to sell. Every animal marketed having structural, genetic or production problems, does not help our cause. Be tough on your evaluations and sifting! Jill and I have been making plans for the NWSS in Denver. We plan on being there and look forward to all the visiting and viewing of cattle in the Yards and on the Hill. We enjoy meeting people and making friends and would love to visit with you about Herefords, or anything else for that matter. Around here we enjoy the occasional fresh turkey (emphasis on occasional) but what we have come to enjoy is a good Hereford Prime Rib. I even get orders for Hereford loins from friends and neighbors for the Christmas season. If I don’t get any for them they have a habit of showing up at our place, they know that sometime during the Christmas - New Year’s season we’ll be having a great prime rib!
