The merging of the two great cowherds is the culmination of a vision set forth by the Cross family to expand the breeding base at Bar Pipe and to develop a practical management Woodcrest (continued from page 5) Syracuse, NE, are a well established registered Hereford family that saw the need to expand their cow herd. They took all of the ‘N’ (2003) cows as well as a portion of the bred heifers. The Windhorst family has hosted many sales over the years and will do so again on March 7 th 2008. The purchase introduces more numbers and proven genetics for their cowherd. Del & Ruth Wood of Woodcrest Farms would like to thank the Wagners and the Windhorsts for making their selections from the Woodcrest herd. They do have some more bred females and the 2007 heifer calf crop still for sale. Both sales were brokered by Handel Marketing LLC, Art Handel of Rapid City, SD. system that focuses on the strengths of the Hereford Breed and the natural grazing potential on the ranch west of Okotoks. The “new” Bar Pipe has a rancherbased philosophy with the stockpiling of grass, an extended grazing period and cows that will calve on pasture in April and May. The ability to forage, doing ability and fertility will be key expectations of the cowherd just as those are important traits and strengths of the Hereford breed in the commercial cattle industry. Temperament will be another ongoing selection criterion at Bar Pipe. A core group of females representing solid foundation Bar Pipe breeding has been augmented by the addition of the top 2/3 of the Kallal Hereford Ranch cowherd and will number about 200 head in total.
