Talk to Us
Music intrudes to our most intimate subjectivity,
thus making it a privileged field to which so-called
„existential semiotics“, a new theory and philosophy
developed by the author himself, may be applied.
Using new semiotic methods and analyses as
the fulcrum of its approaches, the volume aims to
clarify why great classical composers from Mozart
and Beethoven to Brahms and Wagner fascinate
music listeners and lovers from all cultures of the
world.
Anthropological and Linguistic Insights
人 类 学 和 语 言 学 观 点
The book is a unique collection of research on sign
languages that have emerged in rural communities
with a high incidence of, often hereditary, deafness.
These „village sign languages“ represent the
latest addition to the comparative investigation of
languages in the gestural modality. With analyses
and primary data from eleven different rural communities,
the volume represents the first concerted
effort by leading experts in both anthropology and
linguistics to capture the social dynamics of „deaf
villages“. The chapters address pertinent issues
in contemporary linguistics, such as cross-modal
contact situations, typological diversity across sign
languages and the impact of language modality on
linguistic structure.
Contemporary historical linguistics is characterized
by basic instabilities in its theoretical foundations.
The studies in this volume both reveal and question
this theoretical instability. The authors reflect about
the potentials and limitations of different paths to
knowledge, different underlying theoretical and
methodological principles, as well as about those
aspects of research on the history of language
linked to the history of science and epistemology.
