is a small palace built in 1480 for the Infanta Brites, possibly by Sansovino, who spent 6
years in Portugal at about this time. In 1528, after the property was acquired by the son
of Afonso de Albuquerque (first Viceroy of India), gardens were added that included a
pavilion with azuleijos. The Quinta’s azuleijo of Susanna and the Elders, dated 1565 (see
plate 44), is the earliest dated tile picture in Portugal.
Rasteiro’s study was done soon after the Quinta was inherited by the Conde de
Mesquitela, who began to take care of it after years of neglect. In the 1970s it was purchased
by Americans, who continued to maintain it, and began to produce a high-quality
California-style wine made from a mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes,
aged in oak. Around the turn of the present century ownership passed back into Portuguese
hands. In 1996, the Quinta was declared a Monumento Nacional by the Instituto
Português do Património Arquitectónico.
