Censor da Academia Real, Dedicada ao Illustrissimo Senhor D. João de Sousa,<br />

Dom Prior da insigne collegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira de Guimarães.<br />

Lisbon: Na Officina de Joseph Antonio da Sylva, Impressor da Academia<br />

Real, 1736. 4°, later plain wrappers, text-block edges sprinkled<br />

red earler. A good to very good copy. (4 ll.), 132 pp. $220.00<br />

FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The subject of this funeral oration, Manoel Caetano de<br />

Sousa (1658-1734), was a clerigo regular theatino, a founding member of the Academia Real<br />

da História and its first director. He was also a member of various other academies of his<br />

day. According to Innocêncio he published nearly 300 works, most of them in Latin. D.<br />

Francisco Xavier de Meneses, Marquês de Ericeira, an intimate friend, wrote a Catálogo<br />

of his writings, both printed and manuscript. Manoel Caetano de Sousa was the elder<br />

brother of António Caetano de Sousa, author of the monumental História genealógica da<br />

Casa Real Portuguesa.<br />

Filipe José da Gama (1713-before 1779), was also a member of the Academia Real da<br />

História and various other academies. He wrote a number of similar funeral eulogies , including<br />

one for D. Fr. Bartholomeu do Pimar, first bishop of Grão Pará, published in 1734.<br />

The volume includes on pp. 125-32 a “Romance endecasyllabo,” by Braz Joseph<br />

Rebello Leite.<br />

FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this little-known initial issue of a short-lived periodical<br />

written by Almeida Garrett in London, after he fled the rule of D. Miguel during the Lutas<br />

Liberaes. He returned to Portugal in 1832, marching on Porto with the Bravos de Mindelo
