162 richard c. ramer authorship of Manuel da Costa is now generally accepted, though brief texts by another author or authors may have been inserted at the time of publication. The Arte de furtar was prohibited by the Spanish Inquisition in 1755 and was listed in the Indices expurgatorios … published in Madrid, 1790. Curiously, it was never prohibited by the Inquisition in Portugal. The engraved portrait of Father António Vieira present in this copy appears to be slightly different from any described in Henrique de Campos Ferreira Lima, Dicionário de iconografia portuguesa; cf. 3437-A for one which is very similar, but with some small differences. j Innocêncio I, 306-8; VIII, 329-31, XXII, 433-7. Alto-Douro: A Camara da Villa de Barcos á Junta da Direcção da Companhia do Alto-Douro. Porto: Typographia Commercial, 1849. 8°, contemporary plain violet wrappers. Vertical fold. A very good copy. 27 pp. $250.00 FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Tightly reasoned attack, supported by statistical analysis, on abuses and restrictions enforced by the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro. It is signed in print on p. 25 by Manoel Pereira de Carvalho, President, Antonio dos Santos Silva, Luiz Ramos Borges Pinto, and Miguel Cardozo da Silva. The Companhia, also known as the Real Companhia Velha, was founded in 1756 in an effort by the Marquês de Pombal to limit long-standing British influence on the Port wine trade. The Companhia officially delineated the boundaries of the Douro wine region, regulated exports of Port, set production limits and prices, and was sole arbiter in disputes between producers and shippers. It also held a monopoly on the sale of brandy, used in the fortification process for making Port wine. Before the Companhia was finally
