signed and dated (Lx Março 99) eight-line presentation inscription on<br />

title page to [Luís Manuel] Monteiro Baptista. Envelope tipped in of the<br />

Associação Portuguesa de Escritores containing José Manuel Mendes’<br />

10.2 x 14.3 cm. card with ten-line message (presumably to Monteiro<br />

Baptista, addressed as “Sr. Dr., meu prezado Amigo”), signed and dated<br />

Lx, 30 Março 99. 154 pp., (1 l.). One of 750 copies. $65.00<br />

FIRST and apparently ONLY EDITION. The author’s Ombro, arma! (1978; 5th ed.<br />

1998) was described as “… um dos romances portugueses mais significativos sobre o<br />

drama da guerra colonial e de uma geração nela perdida ou por ela estigmatizada.”—<br />

Machado, Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, p. 311; see also pp. 310-1. Professor and<br />

lawyer, Communist Party deputy to the Assembleia da República (1989–1991), and<br />

president of the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores, José Manuel Mendes has published<br />

at least 8 volumes of poetry. One was originally issued in French; another, Presságios do<br />

sul [1993], received the Grande Prémio de Literatura ITF in 1995 and was subsequently<br />

published in Louvain in a bilingual Portuguese-French edition, and again in Belgium<br />

in 1997. He has also published a collection of short stories, a collection of essays, and<br />

several other works.<br />

Provenance: Luís Manuel Monteiro Baptista (1926-2009), distinguished Portuguese<br />

physician and Communist Party militant, published a number of articles in<br />

scientific journals.
