FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this liberal hymn in favor of the proposed first Portuguese<br />
constitution, which was at the time in draft form; the final version was approved in<br />
1822. The author’s name appears on p. [3]. On p. 9, verse 30, it is mentioned that Madeira<br />
and the Açores had adhered to the new constitution, and in verse 31 on the same page it<br />
is said that Bahia, Pará, Pernambuco and Maranhão are on board. Conspicuously absent<br />
is any mention of favorable reaction on the part of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, or Minas<br />
Gerais. The unfavorable reaction of many of the Brazilian delegates to the constitutional<br />
Côrtes was one of the major causes of Brazilian Independence.<br />
A native of Porto, the author (1794-1861) was “Sub-director graduado da secretaria<br />
da Camara dos Deputados.”<br />

87. LEÃO, Duarte Nunes de. Origem da lingoa portuguesa. Lisbon: Pedro<br />
Crasbeeck, 1606. 4°, contemporary limp vellum (a bit shrunk, ties gone,<br />
covers soiled), spine with vertical manuscript title, yapped edges, text<br />
block edges gauffered. Woodcut initials. Cancel slips pasted on A6 v ,<br />
F3 v , F4 r , F5 v and F6 r (page numbers), but not on 2 v (title of prefatory<br />
poem), as is present on another copy. Repair of about 7 x 4 cm at inner<br />
margin of title page, affecting two words of the three-line imprint (“Em”<br />
before “Lisboa” and “Impresso” before “por Pedro Crasbeeck”), and<br />
touching the letter “A” in “Anno”. Occasional small, light stains and<br />
minor soiling. Overall still a good copy. Bookplate of Alfonso Cassuto.<br />
