FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this collection of three speeches defending the history,
actions and rights of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro,
also known as the Real Companhia Velha, which exercised a virtual monopoly of the
Port wine trade for over 100 years. The company had been founded in 1756 in an effort
by the Marquês de Pombal to limit the British influence on the Port wine trade. It gained
something of a monopoly until its exclusive privileges were extinguished in 1865.
Felix Pereira de Magalhães (1794-1878), a native of Chaves, fought in the Peninsular
War and afterwards received a degree in law at Coimbra University. A liberal, he defended
the 1820 revolution and the right to trial by jury. Active in the Socieadade Patriótica Portuense,
he opposed the absolutist movement of the Conde de Amarante. Serving in the
constitutionalist army from 1828, upon the return of the liberals to Porto he became an
administrator of the Companhia do Alto Douro. In 1834 he wrote a pamphlet upholding
the rights of D. Maria II. After the restoration of the Carta Constitutional in 1842, he was
elected deputy for Trás-os-Montes. In 1846 he became president of the Board of Directors
of the Banco de Portugal. Elevated to peer of the realm in 1845, he became Minister of
Justice in the government of the Conde de Tomar.
