PRIMING OUR
PEOPLE FOR
SUCCESS
Good people are critical to our success. As one of Malaysia’s
most preferred employers, Maxis continues to build its
strong Employee Value Proposition to attract, retain and
engage quality talent. In 2009, we focused on organisational
transformation and alignment, strengthened key
management positions, undertook talent management and
development activities as well as carried out proactive
employee engagement.
STRENGTHENING THE ORGANISATION
To meet our customers’ future needs and the demands of the
business, we have been building a strong reservoir of Malaysian
and global talents geared to deliver outstanding results.
In 2009, we hired a Chief Operating Officer, Head of Network
and Technology, and General Counsel, all of whom possess
proven credentials and bring with them many years of invaluable
experience. We also sought out and hired ambitious and bright
young graduates from leading universities locally and abroad,
bringing them onboard our Maxis Management Associate
programme. By putting the right people in the right places, we
are laying strong foundations for our future.
The year also saw us launch a strategic partnership with IBM
which has been tasked with implementing world class IT best
practices to strengthen our IT operations. To attain our goal of
becoming one of the best metropolitan networks in the world,
we undertook a total revamp of our Network Engineering and
Operations division involving more than 1,000 employees. These
initiatives too are laying the groundwork for us to meet
customers’ future needs.
We also took the opportunity to realign our priorities to our
overall corporate strategy and financial objectives, where for the
first time we expanded shared key performance measures down
to our General Managers (around 50 people). These measures
included financial, operational and people elements and there
are plans to extend these shared measures to other levels.
Helping Maxis People Shine
At Maxis, we recognise employees’ need for continual
development in order to remain relevant, grow in their roles, and
be effective in a rapidly changing and demanding environment.
To this end, we have ensured training and development
opportunities are accessible to everyone.
In 2009, via the Maxis Academy, we invested more than RM11
million in employee development activities across all levels and
functions to ensure our people were equipped to help Maxis
realise its strategies and achieve its goals.
Maxis’ development initiatives have always been driven by
creativity and this is evident in the host of convenient learning
channels we provide our people. Every Maxis employee has
access to our entire continuous learning virtual library which
offers them endless opportunities to learn at their own pace and
convenience. Whether it is via e-books, do-it-yourself courses or
a virtual platform, aptly called Second Life, our easily accessible
programmes have helped increase employee learning and have
brought down training costs per employee by 6%.
Maxis has traditionally been strong in great service delivery and
we continue to roll out numerous functional training
programmes that keep our customer services, retail and sales
front liners at the top of their game. To ensure our technical
teams keep abreast of the latest technological developments,
they can turn to Network and Technology’s Technical
Competencies Library or our internal pool of subject matter
experts for guidance and assistance.
To be the best, Maxis believes in partnering with the best. Since
2007, we have been collaborating with top schools and leading
organisations for our leadership and management programmes.
Last year, selected senior management employees had the
opportunity to attend Harvard Business School’s Premier Business
Management Programme and an Executive Education
Programme tailor-made for Maxis in collaboration with Harvard
Business Publishing and IBM. These platforms offer our senior
