Educating the legal profession<br />

The <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> also met with the<br />

coordinator and Vice-President of the Indigenous Law<br />

Students and Lawyers Association-Tarwirri (ILSLAV-Tarwirri),<br />

an association that supports and assists Indigenous lawyers<br />

in Victoria. This meeting provided the <strong>Commissioner</strong> with<br />

insight into common issues confronting Indigenous lawyers<br />

in Victoria, including ways in which ILSLAV-Tarwirri assists its<br />

members to overcome these issues.<br />

Meetings with interstate legal regulators<br />

The <strong>Commissioner</strong> recognises the importance of<br />

establishing and maintaining solid relationships with<br />

interstate legal regulators. These relationships promote<br />

the sharing of information and ideas around key<br />

regulatory matters. During <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>09</strong>, the <strong>Commissioner</strong><br />

hosted 11 telephone conferences with the <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong><br />

<strong>Commissioner</strong> NSW, <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> Qld and<br />

Chief Executive Officer, <strong>Legal</strong> Practice Board WA to discuss a<br />

range of issues including the handling of complaints about<br />

lawyers in their respective states.<br />

Publications for lawyers<br />

In <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>09</strong>, the <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> produced two<br />

new fact sheets for lawyers, titled Responding to the <strong>Legal</strong><br />

<strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> and Working with your client.<br />

Responding to the <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> provides an<br />

overview of the process for responding to a complaint to<br />

the <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong>, while Working with your<br />

client advises legal practitioners on ways of developing and<br />

maintaining positive relationships with clients.<br />

These publications are included in the information packs<br />

distributed to lawyers at the ethics workshops. In total,<br />

the <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> distributed 113 copies<br />

of Responding to the <strong>Legal</strong> <strong>Services</strong> <strong>Commissioner</strong> to both<br />

solicitors and barristers during <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>09</strong>.<br />
