<strong>and</strong> Shiites by mix<strong>in</strong>g religious categories with<br />
ethnic ones.<br />
The language is often the key marker of ethnicity<br />
<strong>and</strong> belong<strong>in</strong>g. 99 percent of Turkmen’s first<br />
language is Turkmen, a dialect of Turkish, <strong>and</strong><br />
only less than one percent reported that <strong>their</strong><br />
first languages were Arabic <strong>and</strong>/or Kurdish.<br />
The second language among Turkmen is mostly<br />
Arabic: 90 percent of non-migrant households<br />
<strong>and</strong> 95 percent of migrant households.<br />
Migrants were more likely to be educated so<br />
it is reasonable most of them speak Arabic,<br />
the official language of Iraq taught through<br />

formal compulsory education. The third language<br />
among Turkmen is Kurdish: 53 percent<br />
of non-migrants <strong>and</strong> 30 percent of migrants.<br />
As summarised <strong>in</strong> Figure 12, Turkish media is<br />
very popular among Turkmen <strong>and</strong> it is no surprise<br />
as they share the same language: Turkish.<br />
Iraqi media sources are second most favourites<br />
among Turkmen followed by other countries’<br />
media <strong>and</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation countries media. The<br />
only significant difference is the lower attention<br />
to Iraqi media among migrant households.<br />
However it is because the most Turkmen follow<br />
different media together for example almost<br />
30 percent follow Turkish <strong>and</strong> Iraqi media<br />
together. Noticeable feature here is Iraqi Turkmen’s<br />
vast <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> Turkish media that may<br />
<strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>their</strong> strong cultural ties with Turkey.<br />
We have also asked the respondents that which<br />
country they feel they belong to. This question<br />
can be used to identify the level of resent-<br />
