218 Turkmen households (corresponds to<br />

more than 20% of all) receiv<strong>in</strong>g remittances,<br />

94% of remittances were fully or partly used<br />

for daily expenses while half of the households<br />

used it towards purchase of durable goods such<br />

as fridges, TVs, washers etc. Buy<strong>in</strong>g estates was<br />

concern of only 11% of remittance receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

households. 7% <strong>and</strong> 19% of remittances were<br />

used towards pay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to sav<strong>in</strong>gs accounts <strong>and</strong><br />

debts respectively. 29% was spent on family<br />

health expenses compared to only 4% on family<br />

celebrations such as wedd<strong>in</strong>gs. Religious<br />
